It seems that the Prophets of old routinely inquired of the Lord about even things like where to find a lost donkey and the Lord answered them. Gordon Hinkley should be able to do the same thing with these poor trapped miners. 3 more just died yesterday trying to rescue them. If we knew the origional 6 were alive or not it would be a big help in the rescue effort.

I think that if Hinkley was a true prophet he would at least do some prophesying. Especially in his own backyard here in Utah. I am not buying all the cheesy excuses we make that its not the Lords will. In fact every time I have a legitimate question about the church all I get is one CHEEEEEZIE excuse after another.

Apparently god is choosy about what he likes to reveal. Smiths' "Zion Camp" followers routinely died of dysentery and cholera, and all god had to tell Smith was, "Boil the water first".

But god did tell smith how to subdivide property in Nauvoo, send certain men on out-of-state missions leaving their wives unattended, and to start a Bank in Kirtland, Ohio (that failed).

God has instructed Hinckley about his position regarding the number of earrings members may wear. Nine lives lost to a mining accident (that most likely includes LDS) seems to be way beyond god's control.

Your question is basically like asking "Why do bad things happen?"
It definitely would be a big help. But I don't think that is what his purpose is. Just because the miners were in Utah does that mean that Pres. Hinckley should find them. Does his authority go no further than the Utah border? The answer is no.
Look dude, there are bad things happening to good people all over the world. If it was the lord's will that President Hinckley find them, then he would reveal that to President Hinckley.
If your real question is whether President Hinckley is a true prophet this is something that you need to find out for yourself. You will not find out by criticizing and saying what about this, what about this.
The only way you will know is to do some real soul searching and prayer.
Gordon B. Hinckley is mindful of those who have died in the mines just as he is of the thousands of soldiers in Iraq and the hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Iraq and the people suffering all over.
Don't think that while the prophets of old were finding their lost donkeys, there weren't bad things happening in other places- and on that same note, don't think that miracles cease to exist today.

Or how about finding out if Osama Bin Laden is dead, and if he's not, then where is he?

How about maybe, the one answer that will convert everyone in an instant...like the magic phrase that will touch everyone and everywhere.

There are some things that have to happen, some things that have to become parts of survival/tragic stories, things that become opportunities for people to grow in their own spiritual journey, to learn from mistakes of others, tragedies to change safety policies, etc.,

The Prophet I'm sure CAN do what you stated, but why stop there, why hasn't he done anything like that before?
Answer:
In the spiritual realm, there's a higher power that controls what happens, the Prophet receives his abilities from God.
To question the prophet why he's not doing anything, would be questioning God's motives as well. (This does not mean the Prophet is God, he simply can't act without God revealing to him what needs to be done.)

Being a Prophet doesn't mean you're psychic all of a sudden, that's not his purpose nor his office as a spiritual leader of a church.

Your attitude is the same as if you said "well president Hinckley should ask what the next winning lotto numbers are to prove he is a true prophet."
That's not the way revealtion works. He receives revelation for the church and what pertains to the gospel, not for individual families. Now, if the families prayed and fasted as to whether their family members were alive or not, they would be entitled to that personal revealtion.
And yes, it is sad that these lives have been lost...I live in Utah so see it regularly on the news.

The Lord is currently on a mission to Timbuktu. The angel Moroni offered to help, but dropped his cell phone in his last Huntington fly over. Any help now is up to the Relief Society, who are on the scene with quilts, casseroles, and gallons of Sanka. In all seriousness, I am sorry about the loss of life. Coal miners perform hard, dirty, very dangerous work. If Mormonism gives the families some hope for the future, more power to it. And I am sure that the Church is helping in every way it can.

i don't believe that President Hinkley lied in any respect. i'm specific that he advised the fact as he knew it. i don't undergo in strategies each and all of the numerous factors of the case yet I do undergo in strategies that Hoffman replaced right into a pretty intelligent con guy who disguised himself as a non secular person. He replaced into ultimately excommunicated and sent to penal complex. Evil people permeate all the products of society and each organisation. you could not blame a great guy like President Hinkley for that.

I'm sure he has asked. If the Lord thought he needed to know, he would tell him. If the Lord thought that we should handle this ourselves, he wouldn't.

Recent prophets have not seemed to get nearly as much divine insight as the old ones. Maybe it had something to do with the end of polygamy (?)
lol.
