well, i teach my children to take responsibility for their mistakes and to learn from them. they are taught that every decision they make has a consequence - good or bad. i encourage them not to argue but to discuss and put yourself in the other person's shoes to better understand what they're trying to convey. when they ask for help, i encourage them to try it on their own first, try different ways of doing things and come to me if they still can't do it.

i have never heard of this book you mentioned, but my kids are 15, 12, 9 and are some of the most well mannered, kind, intelligent kids around.

hope this helps : )
