Depends on what kinda person you are...
If you want here and now and don't mind buying upgrades then Xbox is for you.
PS3 is more about the future, the games are starting to roll in and it has lots of options... My PS is full of games, movies, TV Shows, Music and so on...i have both the Xbox and PS3... PS3 is at centa stage in my house.... heh my Xbox is also away getting fix AGAIN for the red rings of death so that helps it along.
It's not a waste.
EDIT - OBSCURE where do you get you "Knowledge" from? call any game store and ask them if PS3 plays normal DVDs and CDs.... then come back and edit or Answer.

This depends on the school of thought.
The PS3 is undoubtably the most powerful of all the new generation consoles with the most gadgets like bluray and such. Although it doesnt greatly outpower the xbox 360 with graphics, it merely does a few things more efficiently.
The PS3 has made some bad choices though, it decided to rely on its fanbase to crack the market and waited too long as they have mostly defected to the xbox 360 side as have the developers who develop primarily for xbox360 then port the game to the ps3. Also it opted to use bluray before the media market had really decided which to roll with of the two new media (Bluray or HD) and the market went with HD meaning your PS3 will be the only thing you will buy bluray for soon enough as blurray in most opinions will phase out.
The PS3 hasnt the support that microsoft can offer in terms of its live service and it will be a while before it does.
If you own a 360 already there is no point in buying the PS3 in my view as you wont see anything different. If you havent bought a next gen console yet i'd go with the more established xbox360 everytime!

PS3 is not a "waste of money".
BUT. . . . . .it isn't a purchase a casual gamer would likely make, then again . . . . .neither is 360 either. A casual gamer can get along fine with a PS2, Xbox, Dream Cast, Wii, etc. as they cost between $100 and $250.
The PS3 and 360 are your more serious types of consoles.
The PS3 is actually a good deal if you can believe that! Here are some reason why PS3 is an amazing machine and worth its $500 to $600 dollar price tag.
-Of course the Blu Ray player ($500-$1,000 value alone)
-Wireless Internet built in.
-Several Data Ports (4 usb, CF, SD, and Memory Stick Duo) to integrate all your digital toys (camera, camcorder, mp3, video) making your PS3 a virtual all in one entertainment system.
-The only system w/TRUE high def gaming (360 and Wii still use DVD which is standard definition upscaled in a higher resolution) as it uses Blu Ray disc as the game media.
-The games being on Blu Ray make it more suitable for the future of gaming as games get larger and larger and graphics get better. This requires more space on a disk and DVD based game are capable of holding 9gb of info (360/Wii) while Blu Ray holds up to 50gb (PS3). You can start to see this already taking place as some games look better for PS3 than they do for 360 (Oblivion, RVS, FEAR, Ninja Gaiden, etc.) and hold more content on disk instead of having to buy add on downloads.
-Has backwards compatibility w/PSone and PS2
-Has a really good internet browser.
-Can integrate with your PC, PSP, etc.and stream data.
-Built in HDMI 1.3 (only 360 "ELITE" has HDMI and that is still version 1.2).
All these features are BUILT IN on a PS3. The 360 doesn'thave many of these features and to buy them all as add ons it would make the system cost well over $700 dollars and the 360 still does not have Blu Ray disc it has a HD DVD add on ($180) for movies only, games are still on standard DVD. The Wii really isn't in the same ball park as PS3 and 360 so I tend to leave it out of the arguement.
PS3 is worth the money when you consider all it does compared to its competitors. The games are great so far and the Blu Ray technology really is quite impressive. I like Sony a lot because they make a quality product and are innovative enough to push the envelope with cutting edge technology. They did it with PSone and PS2 and those both got off to slowstarts. But I think most people will come around to see all it can do now and for the future of gaming.
You really have to own one to appreciate how versitile and innovative it really is.
Take care.
Those are some of the real big things a PS3 has "OT O

Obscure- "it can't play normal dvds and cds"
Wow, you make me laugh, you must be a complete retard. PS3 plays any normal cd and dvd and as well as Blu ray.
Get your game facts right.
It ain't a waste of money if you overall look at whats included. Storage-music,games,videos,pics
Browser- surf the net
Games-sick a $ $ games
Blu Ray- amazing 1080p quality movies
Home- playstaion online service ( november 2007)
You can also install a separate operating system like Linux and practically run lthe ps3 like a computer and type up essays and whole bunch of other stuff
So overall, not a waste of money whatsoever just depends on what YOU want to use it for.

Personally, I don't think so.
Obviously, it depends on what and how much you're going to use it. If its for Blu-ray, then it's the cheapest player (and a good one) on the market. If its for games, then it's just starting to hit its stride with some fantastic games coming out soon.
Just to correct 'Jackwarmandcosie';
Blu-ray is currently beating HD-dvd by about 2:1 in sales and looking the more dominant format.
+
I'd rather use the spin that Sony delayed its console until it was ready, rather than send out a console that had an inherent fault and have to extend its warrenty in order to try and gain an advantage (which obviously hasn't worked as well as they'd hoped thanks in part to the Wii, DS and continued success of the PS2.)

well if ya like graphics no, but say if you are not into mature games then yes.
but the blu-ray feature makes up for that considering how expensive they are. and it can run linux which is sick but if you want graphics without the price 360 is good. or if you do not care about graphics at all and want a heck load of fun wii is good because of amazing interactivity and low price.
ps. godfather on ps3 is awesome and 360 breaks easier (reffering to "red rings of death" term used above

It's not a waste if you like watching blu-ray movies. because it's the cheapest blu-ray player you're gonna find. they are a couple good games out there. but the video game library can't compare to the 360. i have both systems, i don't play the PS3 as much as my 360, but it's not totally useless. it is a fine machine though.

Depends on how much you use it. Do you want or need it? Playstation 3 is expensive but just only that games are more fun than computer games. If you really want it for granted, then you just buy it.

Currently, the PS3 may be a waste of money. If you want to buy a PS3, you should wait for the price to reduce.
