I just paid 2.29 for a freaking puff of air pastry(a shell of dough full of air, I thought it was something else). Yesterday it was 1.05 for a (good) donut which they seem to no longer carry. Is the world coming to an end soon and the pastry dealers the only ones that have the secret to escape?

Yes. In the book of Donutronomy, it says "...and in the last days many will be deceived. They will pay more for less...pastry will turn into freaking puffs of air...people will search in vain for good donuts...and then the world will end..."

You can lookup the passage for yourself if you don't believe me.

...hmm...could be, since it seems to be a sign of self seeking greed...

2 Timothy 3:1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

The world is not ending you are slowly losing your mind and your ability, and judgement. By next week you will be a vegetable, but at least you will be worth about $0.79 a pound.

There is a shortage of wheat due to climate change. Perhaps it is a sign of the times or perhaps we are just experiencing the first pangs of environmental collapse.
