My cat gets these coldsore like lumps on her lip like every week and ive took her to the vets and it cost me £40 for some antibiotics to help calm it down and they didnt even work very well....but he said there is no known cure for it! and i feel so bad for her cause she looks awful bless her but she doesnt seem to be in any pain.... but it must be pretty uncomfortable like a really annoying spot on your nose or something..... i tried putting zovirax(however u spell it) on it but all she does is lick it off!!...... but the vet before said it was like a cat version of a coldsore and i didnt know a way i can help calm it down without spending £40 a week on antibiotics and constantly taking her to the vets..... cus these tablets and stuff dont really help.....
so if anyone knows how to help coldsores.... i will try anything!

Thanks xx:)

That's not a cold sore--cold sores in people are caused by the herpes virus (herpes simplex, it's one of the forms of herpes viruses). Cats get the herpes virus too, but in them it manifests as runny eyes. To clear that up you need to give 250 - 500mg of powdered lysine on the food for a week or two (we use this with our FIV positive cats who have the virus, it bonds with it and clears up the eyes very quickly in a few days).

However what you're describing is a rodent ulcer. I found this online--

Rodent (indolent) ulcer Part of the common eosinophilic allergic syndrome in cats which includes eosinophilic granulomas, eosinophilic plaques, and miliary dermatitis Ulcer forms on the upper lip; ulcer can be very deep Skin scrapings, biopsy Steroids; sometimes antibiotics; look for underlying cause

Looks like steroids or antibiotics are the way to go, but you need to find what's triggering it. The vet should be helping you on this.

I'm not certain what it is, but if it's what I think it is, it is something called rodent ulcer. It can be caused by plastic eating and drinking bowls, or flea allergies, or stress, or allergies, they're not exactly sure what causes it. If it is rodent ulcer it needs to be treated with steroids to bring down the swelling and antibiotics. If left untreated it will develop lesions, and these lesions will turn into cancer. It does recur. You might try changing your cat to a hypoallergenic cat food, remove any plastic bowls, or try to reduce it's stress. Again, I'm not certain that's what it is. I got this information from October's issue of Cat Fancy magazine.
