According to the Prophecy found in Daniel, this was a cleansing of the sanctuary. The Millerites believed it was when Christ would return to take us to heaven. When it did not happen, people reevaluated what they had thought about the prophecy and realized that it was the heavenly sanctuary that was the subject of the prophecy...in other words, it was when Christ went from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place...to intercede for us in the Heavenly Sanctuary. The Bible and Ellen White both said that there is no known date of Christs return. Jesus said the only sign we would have is the sign of Jonah. So what was that sign?
Jonah's story teaches us that we do what God wants us to, and support those we help win to God...we should not preach, teach and run off waiting for them to fail. As a Church body, we must support the rest of the body--continue to feed the babies in God's family; continue to grow in our own walk with Him as well.
He will come for those who are not always ready and waiting, like a thief in the night. This does not mean He will come secretly and still some people away; for every eye will see and every ear will hear when it does happen.

Actually, something did happen in 1844. William Miller and his followers believed that God would cleanse the sanctuary in 1844. They thought that the sanctuary was the earth and Jesus would return and cleanse the earth, bringing about the end of the world. They calculated and came up with the date. Scholars believe that they got the date correct but the event was wrong. The sanctuary that the bible had prophesied about was the heavenly sanctuary. It was in Heaven where the event took place and not on earth as William Miller predicted. So in 1844, the second coming didn't take place. Instead the cleansing of the sanctuary in Heaven took place.

This was during the time of the Millerite movement in American history. These students of the Bible that comprised of many different denominations were right about the date but they were wrong about the event. Daniel 8:14 did not focus on the end of the world as they originally dedeuce from this time prophecy but this passage referred to the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary. Christ moved from the Holy place to the Most Holy place in the Heavenly Sanctuary. He now intercedes for us. He is also applying the benefits of the atonement that was completed at calvary.

Christ is our heavenly intercessor. He represents us before the Father. He is our advocate and he will judge righteously.

Whenever a group makes a prediction for the return of Christ, and it doesn't happen, they go fishing for an excuse to explain it away.

Scripture is pretty clear when it says that if someone makes a prediction and it does not come to pass that they are a false prophet, and not of God.

Whenever someone makes a prediction of when Christ will come again, it doesn't happen. He'll come when least expected.
