At the end of your life, would you rather have people remember you as a highly intelligent person or a highly compassionate person?

Which of those two qualities do you think makes more of an impact on the people you are around, and which quality is more important to make our world a better place?

To put it in another way, let's say you can focus on developing the ability to be more compassionate or you can focus your energies on education so that you are more knowledgable, which would you prefer and why?

I would rather be a far more compassionate person. I have discovered that people may not remember all that you have taught them but they will sure remember how you treated them. The message of Christ is Love. Jesus said "By this shall all men should know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another".

That's a tough one. I think that often, intelligent-minded people with big hearts get perceived as less intelligent, because even those who CHOOSE to be generous might be thought to be easily taken advantage of. The heart can overshadow the mind. But that doesn't really answer the question, does it? I would rather be KNOWN for having an intelligent mind. That garners more respect, I think. I could still be a kind person, but covertly. And if I had to pick just one of the two traits to actually possess, I'd pick intelligent mind-- because if you've got an intelligent heart without the intelligent mind, you WILL get taken advantage of, and you'll have no sense of discernment.

Compassionate. Intelligence is a great thing, don't get me wrong... and I love learning new things, but I would much rather do things in order to help others than to simply just amass knowledge so that others will say how intelligent I was in life. That seems rather empty unless it was put to use in a compassionate way to help mankind.

Well heck, you want the truth?

Being compassionate is intelligent and wise.

for your question - at the end of the day, compassion comes from love, and I'd rather be a loving and compassionate person than a cold and hard smart guy.

Like everyone else in the world, I would like to be known as both. And I think the two qualities fit quite nicely together. But if this is a question where I have to choose one, it would be compassion. In real life, I think that compassion is actually one of my defining characteristics, although I'm not sure how that translates on R&S. :)

No one really can nor should pick one over the other. One without the other is useless! It's far better to work on being the Full Meal Deal--even if you know you're going to fall short. All anyone can do is try.

Ultimately, I prefer both, to be intelligent and to be compassionate. As a Christian, I am to be Christ-like and He is both.

Why not do both? Being intelligent doesn't stop you from being compassionate and the other way around.

you can be a intelligent and smart person and not having a higher education. Wisdom of God is not the same as earthly wisdom.
I like both.

Compassionate. I'd rather lend my only brain cell to someone in need, than have a huge brain with nothing to do.
