Some might comment that women need to be pretty to get what they need, but the most important thing we need is simple: self confidence and self esteem. The two of them go hand in hand throughout our lives.
Beauty changes as we age, weight comes and goes, but self confidence and self esteem continue to grow as we age and gain more life experience, relish in successes and cope with failures. Failures in our lives are lessons, not the end of the world.
Liking ourselves for who we are (both imperfect and perfect because of our uniqueness) is important in life, especially when we are in school and especially in our careers. When we feel confident about who we are, our colleagues and bosses notice it. In many cases, our confidence might be just the thing our bosses notice when considering staff for an important job promotion. If we lack that self confidence, or appear to in any way, bosses may feel that we can't handle the new responsibilities; that we are intimidated by others, that we will make a bad presentation about ourselves to others, and so forth. We may be the most intelligent, competent and capable person within the department, but if we lack confidence, we won't get that job promotion. In other words, if we like who we are, people DO notice it. If we don't, they will notice that too.
Self confidence comes from self esteem. If we feel confident that we can perform or handle a challenge in work, in school, and it turns out that it was a success, it boosts our self esteem. The more self esteem we possess the more confident in ourselves we feel. Confidence is the essence we see when a woman walks into a room and everyone notices her, wants to talk with her, laugh, share things. She may not be gorgeous, she may not dress as well as someone else, but if her confidence comes through she is the one with the most beauty, the one whose true essence shines through. And that is always with you, no matter how old you are.

Acknowledgment, respect, equality in relationships regardless of who makes the money and who has the kids. Women also need to have the power and ability to maintain their own lives, independent of any other persons help or input. If you don't have the means to go it alone, you end up stuck in a relationship that tends to get abusive. Know your life plan, and stick to your guns, and the rest works itself out.
