The short answer is: we can never TRULY know what's in their hearts; but since the majority of Americans are still believers, the political reality is you can't get elected unless you at least SAY that you agree with them....

Actually the US Constitution specifically says that there should be no religious requirement to qualify for holding office.
However, with an electorate that is 80% Christian, it's hard to imagine anyone who is NOT Christian actually gaining a foothold in Presidential politics. The candidate who has gained the most headway in recent memory is Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who is Jewish. However, he's still a strong theist and a very religiously observant man.

You make it sound like they can pick and choose their religion based on what people think
Sure, a presidential candidate that notices 60% of his people like the colour blue is going to wear blue suits but just because a lot of people do or don't believe in God it won't change his outlook on that.... Believe isn't a suit you can put on when it suits you, it is a life changing choice that takes a long time to alter if at all

Nowhere in the US Constitution does it require someone running for president to be a believer.
The reason that only believers run for president...is because nobody will vote for an atheist, no matter how qualified he is. I think that's pretty evident by the idiot we currently have in office. People actually voted for this guy...TWICE....

The US constitution does not require any test for any religion. Churches do concerted effort to demonize [is that ironic?] Atheist, but their influence is waining. Most candidates just pretend to belief in god for pragmatic reasons, the think it gives them extra votes

You can't have a candidate who is 11% african-american, 13% latino, 73% caucasian, 3% other, 3% jewish, 50% protestant, 25% catholic, 1% muslim, 21% atheist or agnostic, 50% male, 50% female.
Obviously, a candidate's best interest is to at least pretend he is a christian.
Numbers don't lie, politicians do.

You'd better read the Constitution again. Nowhere in the Constitution does it require the president to be a believer.

Because, and this I know as an American, Americans do not pay attention to the person's actions..only the slogans he/she spouts.
Society don't care about the issues, it doesn't care about what type of person the candidate really is based on past performance...we only care about hearing the magic words like "values".
As soon as someone says they believe in "values" society lights up like we all just won $1,000,000. Doesn't matter who says this..just the words. If Hitler got up and said he had values then society would drool and go "values..I like values, he likes values, values are good"
So because this is such an easy way to snatch up large amounts of votes people stomp around and spout drivel about God, even when their actions show his/her words are lies, because people equate religion with values. Society has forgotten that it was social values that gave rise to religion....not religion that gave rise to values.

No politician dare admit openly that he/she is an atheist, as he/she would instantly lose a whole pack of votes, since the christian US of A are intolerant of anyone who doesn't fit the stereotype of the leader of the free world who has god on his/her side. I wonder who IS being a hypocrite. Maybe more than one?
