Hi ya, the best thing to do it get a master LJU from a DIY / maplin store, its very simple to do, but you can also ring BT if your prefer, please ensure when you install anew socket on the rear of teh LJU are 6 slots (IDC) please ensure you punch the wire home, this helps prevent noisy line, crackling calls, you cant buy the proper tool for about £6-8 from ebay, called a krone tool or similar, or a plastic one from a diy store as long as the line goes into slot 2 & 5, you cant go wrong! hope this helps.

You would be best to either try your phone or a neighbours to call BT at 150.....
because if you call them they will do a test on your line to see if there are any errors and proceed with a suitabe action from there....
Do you have one or more phones ? if more than one are they all faulty ? if not it could be the actual phone that's at fault.
Ps. it sounds like its just the phone that's faulty as the internet is still working....

Go back to BT tell them you've done all the things they've stated and see what they suggest. Try and keep a record/ print out so that as someone suggests something you've already tried you can read it out.
DIY stores sell approved sockets.

It sounds as though they are doing maintainence work nearby.
Your local DIY shop or do it all/focus B&Q should sell main socket boxes(will be cheaper than buying one off BT).

Have you more than one phone? are they all hung up properly? A phone "off the hook" or faulty will cause just that problem. If you still have internet then the line is ok, or possibly there is a wire off at the exchange
