the ureters enters the bladder with an angle so that when it's filled the mucous lining compresses them against the muscular wall so it has a functional valve not an anatomic one.

The ureters are funnel-shaped tubes that carry urine from the kidneys. Ureters enter the bladder at a diagonal angle and have a special one-way valve system that, as the bladder fills, normally prevents urine from flowing back up the ureters in the direction of the kidneys.

physiologic design.. plus the positive pressure of the kidneys. urine can flow backwards if the ureter is blocked by a kidney stone. this can lead to infection; renal distention and kidney failure if not resolved.
