I believe it means that whatever is the most important to you, that's what you worship.

For example, if the most important thing to you is money, that's your god.

If the most important thing to you is fame, then that's your god.

I could certainly be wrong, but that's my final answer :)

In Christ,

Dennis

Read the whole passage dear Matt 6:19-24

It's a rather eloquent argument against materialism.

Jesus is saying that being a good person (aka laying up treasure in heaven) is more important than having a lot of money.

The theme here is "You cannot serve God & Money"

Your heart is not open to heal the suffering of man, if it's online watching all your stock market investments.

A Buddhist would say this means "Karma is more important than cash".

For me personally, it means that my treasure is symbolic. It does not have to mean riches, money or gold. My treasure is my children...wherever they are, my heart follows. I worry about them, I'm proud of them. My emotions and my life force are with them always. I am tied to them no matter where in the world they are. IF you did put that meaning into something superficial such as a car, house etc., it is simply stating that your heart (feelings, emotions) are tied up in it. If something were to happen to it, you'd be very upset.

In another perspective you could look at it like as when you are on your life's journey, searching for whatever it is that will make you happy, or what you think will make you happy...once you find that "treasure" you will find what true love is.

This passage can be deciphered in many ways, pray about it, God led you to it for a reason so obviously he's trying to tell you something. Have faith in Him and what you need will be given to you! :) Good luck and God Bless!!

Jesus is telling His followers to store up treasure in Heaven, rather than on earth. Your earthly treasures can be gone in an instant, but your heavenly treasures (the graces that you earn by your prayers and good deeds) do not go away so easily. Thus, if you work for earthly treasures, your heart is very much of this world; but if you work for heavenly treasures, then your heart is with God.

For example: let's suggest you have taken many pains to make a good career (lots of labor, sleepless nights, years of education and so on). Would you leave your career easily? Suppose, no. Because it was so difficult to gain it. So your heart is with your career.
Like this: if you don't take pains to get what is usually supposed to be utterly good in this world (wealth, career, social level, education ...), and prefer to help people (for example), your heart is not with this world, as you seek for approval of God. In other words, you gather your treasure in heaven.

As spirit, (the image of God the Father) we have no need for the riches for the physical world. But many have been deceived into thinking that it is the body that gives life, and that riches come from God the Father, they do not they come from Satan.

If you seek God and the kingdom, then you can not love the things of the world, and if you choose between the two you will love one of them and hate the other.

Read the story of Lazarus and the rich man. The rich man followed all the laws of Moses, but still he found himself in hell, and Lazarus went to heaven. The rich man loved money more than he loved God.

Jesus is saying, treasure the spiritual things that reside in heaven. Because that will pull you up to heaven. But if you treasure the pleasures of earth, the time will come----to everyone----when these pleasures will cease. Then, where will you be?

What is your treasure? What do you treasure?
Is it money, fame, sex? Jesus is basically saying, If you make Him your treasure, your heart will stay with Him, and you will be able to spend the rest of Eternity with Him.

What you value most you love and what you love you will stay close to and defend no matter what.

So lay up treasure in heaven. In other words, get your priorities straight. There is NOTHING more important than God. So get with Him and stay with Him.

Matthew 16:4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it….
The Holy Bible gives the cause of this cancer and blight: " Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. Romans 1:22-27

I think it means, for whatever your treasure is, money, jewelry, home, your parents/family, your spouse, your kids, your contribution in your society, your help and donations to the poor and weak, etc... that is where your heart is.
