Travelsphere are pretty good at giving out the price of flight a year in advance, try them or maybe Thomas Cook, we booked our tickets to Australia with them and got a fantastic deal.

Use a general flight booking engine first - like expedia.com within your country.

Once you know the airline that has the best deal, go to that airline's site directly. I have found many airlines (American Airlines and Air Newzealand, for example) will guarrantee a lower fare on their own site, plus it's one less middle man to handle your booking!

Orbitz is the cheapest and very dependable, I use them all the time.
The discounts can save you as much as 2/3 of the original price.
