I own a 1985 PU11 maxima, Vg20et 5 speed, it refuses to go into 1st or 2nd gear at all. The throw out bearing is quite loud, but doesnt make any noises when clutch is engaged. Could it cause the problem?

When i try to put it into gear, it makes no crunching noises, only a faint knock when you really try to force it into gear.

Mileage is pretty low for its age, 114,000kms. The car was owned by a young guy before me, so perhaps he thrashed it.

Your throw out bearing is mainly for your clutch plate, if you transmission will not go into 1st or 2nd then that is most likely one of the smaller shafts inside the trans has issues or the shift fork is not engaging the gears. My guess is a rebuild.
You did not mention the mileage on the trans, I would guess by the age it might have high mileage and has a lot of wear and tear on the gears.

Back in the day, the transmission on my 89 maxima failed in a similar manner. A slight leak in the transmission went undetected, and the fluid went low. Over time the transmission succumed to overheating at which point one of its main bearings tore. The shrapnel left over from the destroyed bearing blocked access to first gear. Not even stubborn ramming would get that gear to engage. The car still engaged the other gears smoothly and was hobbled to a shop.

I have no doubt your obstruction is in the gear box, had your clutch fork gone, your clutch would have gone rock stiff, and and press as you may, the pedal would not be able to disengage the pressure plate.

Check your fluid level if it is a hydralic clutch slave cylinder on the fire wall. Most often if you have loud noise coming from the clutch area depending on how many miles you have on the car your clutch system needs replaced. The throw out bearing operates in one manner it pushes against the pressure plate and releases the disc to come away from the flywheel so you can shift gears up and down.If your disc is worn out most likely the the springs in the pressure plate and disc anti rattle springs are gone also. But most often the pressure plate has worn out and the lining on the disc is gone or worn down.If you have a clutch job done on it have the pressure plate resurfaced and the hydralic slave cylinder check for leaks. You also have a slave cylinder on the side of the transmission that applies pressure againt the clutch fork have it checked.I am a machanic and work on different cars.

The flywheel pilot bearing could be dragging the transmission shaft. You will have to preform a complete clutch job to find out what failed. Most likely the clutch hydraulics are also worn. Old Max might also need new motor mounts too. So ask your self is it worth fixing up a 22 year old car?

The T/O bearing is used to disengage the clutch. If it was at fault, you would have the same level of difficulty in getting any gear, including reverse.
