You might benefit from an active chanting practice as a form of meditation rather than a silent sitting practice which works against your ADHD tendencies.
Way of Oneness Chanting Practice
Being more musically inclined, I created a nonsectarian alternative to the combination of chanting a rhythmic phrase (or mantra) to a visual object (often a scroll, picture or statue). This is a more active form of meditation as compared to the silent form of meditation which is discussed below.
You are more than welcome to use this chanting practice if you think you may find it possibly useful. While there are many folks that seem to believe their particular mantra (which is a phrase which is repeated as a focusing device has "magical power", it really is the mindfulness that matters. The mantra is just one of the vehicles you can use to get there.
I recommend "Be One. Be Love. Be Peace." as the chanting and meditation mantra which is appropriate for nonsectarian, universal spirituality in the Way of Oneness. This phrase is a reframing and translation of the Hindu term "satchitananda" (which means pure being, pure consciousness, and pure bliss) and is another way of referring to the interdependent forces of the Universe or the universal divine (or Brahman or God or Goddess or Dharmakaya or whatever label you prefer).
I use two forms: "Be One. Be Peace." for those who prefer a four syllable "mantra" or more often I recommend "Be One. Be Love. Be Peace." for those who prefer the pace of a six syllable "mantra". As in drumming, people who like to chant are attracted to the rhythm and they find it an easy way to center themselves and become mindful.
The specific chanting practice method that I find helpful in the vein of the Way of Oneness (the realization of interdependence) is to chant "Be One. Be Love. Be Peace" in a position of reverence (palms together in front of chest with fingers pointing upward - a traditional gesture of respect) to a picture or photograph of the planet Earth which is a wonderful visual representation of the interdependent forces of the Universe. Just chant this phrase loudly or softly in a comfortable pace until you are satisfied.

Dear Wolf626, We have to clear misconception regarding meditation. It never happens from the day one. It is practice and persistence all the way, like any other new work we learn. Whenever a thought arises, do not stick to thought for long. Obviously another thought will take place of the first one. Be in a cycle of thoughts, never stay long with a single thought. The key is the gap-between the thoughts.
Try to be in surrounding where there is less distraction. Start with some meditation music to listen to. Later you can gradually meditate without it. You can also try with lighting candles, burning incense. Meditate when you get up in the morning and / or when you are about to sleep. These are the times when our brain is more idle and hence more chances of going into meditative states.
Remember, try to be regular, Welcome to the spiritual world. There is nothing better.

I'm sure you've had caffeine before, so you know if that helps. I've also heard ginseng can help ADHD's.
I guess my mind isn't exactly normal, either, but I would say that meditation is not something you need to worry about. It's not an ultra powerful magic trick-panacea-door to another dimension or anything. Try to make your life a living meditation. Play some video games, I find them quite meditative. Perhaps a yoga posture will help clear your mind, either by relaxing you or forcing you to concentrate. (consider having a teacher show you the headstand) But unless it comes naturally, don't worry about trying to transcend reality by contemplating your navel.

when I am going to sleep I try to meditate so I don't have ten million things going around in my head so I pick a colour its ends up always being black because it is more successful then a pretend to be falling down a hole which I never get to the bottom of so you can pick any colour but picture a wall or hole or something and concentrate on it and if you start to mind wonder just come back and concentrate again you will get better at it each time.
And fish oil for ADHD I swear by it promise you.

Same thing happens to me!
I find either concentrating on one thing (like my breathing, or a particular spot in my body - solar plexus or 3rd eye) is a good technique. I can bring my attention back to it when it wanders off.
Alternatively, try listening to a guided mediation? There are some you can listen to for free at: www.healergeorge.com
Some of them are better quality than others.
Good luck though! I know how frustrating it is to spend 20 minutes thinking round in circles!!!

True meditation are for the pure in heart. If your heart is not pure meditation will be just like a self hypnosis to distract you from your real problems which you are running away from and do no want to face. So which one are you?

Best to see your doctor if you are having problems with your meditation.Maybe you are overdosing and it is best not to drink alcohol at the same time.I hope that this has helped and you will be able to medicate with no further problems.I don't know, doctors today are just not what they used to be.
