I was out by the time it was redesignated "Light". Had a little contact with them in the late 70's when the Reserve Unit I was in did record fire. We were at Presidio SF.

During Basic in 73 they were laughing at us.

It was sad to see Ord close.

I go by there several times a year and have gone looking at the area I was in for Basic, that area is abandoned. It's Cal State University Monterey now. A lot of the housing is occupied like at Presidio SF. Not sure if they are rented or sold but it carries on and still has a PX (or did 4 years ago) to support Presidio Monterey and the Naval Post Grad School, it's a bit larger than the one at Presido Monterey.

Last I saw of them was the convoys to Travis for deployment to Gulf 1.

Sure I remember 7th ID (L). I was at Ft Irwin and they'd attach a battalion or two to the heavy forces for force-on-force rotations. I could see there purpose in specific environments such as urban or jungle, but in open terrain fighting-not a good idea. My tank company would wipe out hundreds at a time.

7th ID was at Fort Ord in Montery California-one of the nicest places to be stationed! We used to drive or court martialed Soldiers there for confinement too.

I don't know about the "light infantry" part, but I was in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea in 64-65. I was flying H-21s at the time out of Camp Stanley. The 7th was based at Camp Casey closer to the DMZ. It was the main Army division in Korea at the time later replaced by the 2nd Inf. Div. out of Ft. Benning, GA. As far as I know it was a full Inf. Div. unless we are talking about two different outfits.

There was 7th Cav. Div. in Viet Nam, but that was an Aviation outfit. I was in the 173rd ABN. Brigade at the time, but we flew many missions together.
