It makes people a part of a society and thus encourages them to be active within that society. The bigger the church, the bigger the society. But what does church do outside of people attending it and having a good time? Not much. Most churches are friendly and most people are entertained by them and for some people it is a healthy activity socially, emotionally, and mentally...and maybe even physically in some churches.

There are churches which are politically active such as the Catholic Church and others.

Role of the Church? Not much these days, as you can tell from the answers in this section. Used to be that the church was supposed to be society's conscience but now it's too small an organisation to really make a difference. So the next time you get robbed, raped, beaten, stolen from, cheated, falsely accused, discriminated against, rained on, fired unjustly, stabbed in the back, injured, cursed at, thrown out of your house or when you catch your partner with another person, find out your unmarried 14 year old daughter is pregnant or your 12 year old son gets shot in school or you have checmicals dumped in your drinking water or you get killed, you can just sit back and be mighty thankful at just how wonderful the decline of the Church has made your life and how you were just so clever to keep yourself and your family away from all this religion nonsense.

As a place for people to just get together and talk. In this day and age with people driving 20 miles to work and living in big homes out in suburbia isolated from other people, it's refreshing to have a place to come back to and just socialize.

The role of the church is to be a hindrance to progress. I wish to move life from this solar system to another. The church wants to bring about the end of the world. I'm for progress. The church is for death.

A way back through the morass of errors we have made of things. Yeah, it's a time machine. Most people don't recognize it as such. Probably because of all that stained glass prettiness.

To prepare, train up and release the sons of God that all creation is waiting for to build God's kingdom here on earth.
To be the bride of Christ to be without spot or wrinkle or any other blemish and be holy to be received by the Lord Jesus Christ on His second coming.

In my opinion:

I think that church is the morality chart in society.

It's getting pretty definite who the church goers are and those who are not.
The more people that don't go to church, the more I think will be easily swayed to go about pleasing/worshiping worldly idols (sex, drugs, alcoholism, other fetishes that can control people).

Outside of church, people are less inclined to self control, and more about personal satisfaction, and personal gain.
Church teaches people to think of others first, to worship God and to exercise self control.
