We're not really allowed to have pets in my apartment complex, but I've seen a couple of other people with cats and even one with a small dog. Should I just go ahead and get a kitten without asking permission, or risk asking and having the manager say no?

Unless you know the terms of these other people's leases, it is a BIG risk to take ~ they may have special permission for some reason, or have been there before the 'no pets' rule was brought in.

If you go ahead and get a kitten and receive notice to get rid of the kitten or get out, what will you do? Are you willing to move, or will you have to give the kitten to a shelter, possibly to be euthanised?

Having an animal can be a big responsibility, I would think this one through very carefully, especially the possible outcome for the kitten!

I'm not anti-pet BTW, I have two cats and love them heaps, so I hope you can get permission to have a kitten, but try and do it right or there could be unfortunate consequences.

Best wishes :-)

Check your lease. Most have a pet clause where you can have a cat or small dog for an additional deposit. Having a pet there without landlord knowledge can be risky, you could be asked to get rid of the pet or face eviction. A cat though is fairly easy to hide as long as it doesn't get out into the common area and can't be seen from a window. I once pet sat for a guy that had to go out of town every couple of months. He had 2 cats in his apartment over two years before he moved to another state and no one ever knew the cats where there.

If your lease says you are not allowed to have pets I would abide by that. You can ask the manager tell him or her that you would like to get a kitten and that you have seen kittens and dogs in the apartments. Ask him/her if there is any pet fees associated with having an animal. If you just go ahead and get the kitten and they find out they can evict you and keep your security deposit. They also can sue you for the remainder of your lease.

Why don't you ask your pet owning neighbours how they managed? Be very careful. They may be a little sensitive about this, especially if they didn't get permission themselves.
You will need to smile a lot and be very diplomatic. Admiring their pets might be a good start.

Please do remember that you must not break the terms of your lease, or you may cause its termination. Read the document very carefully before you proceed.

Just because someone else breaks the rules, doesn't mean you should. Actually if you have a pet in an apartment without permission, that is grounds for eviction.
