How does the Disney Channel make profit? Some friends and I were debating it. I don't understand how they make money with their television channel. On the Channel they do not show any outside advertising. So how does the channel it self make profit?

Second

I was watching CNBC and on a show it stated that High School Musical made over a billion dollars? How is this possible?

They make it off of the sales of DVD's and cds. High School Musical, Hannah Montana, et al, have sold ridiculous amounts of products. Albums from both of those entities sold massive numbers and topped the billboard charts, so I'm betting thats where most of the money comes from. High School Musical's Soundtrack was the biggest selling album of 2006, and it was one of Disney Channel's highest rated tv movies ever. It also has a concert tour, a theatrical stage production, dolls, video games, and books. Kids watch the stuff, and parents buy the stuff. Lots of kids nagging parents = big bucks.

Disney's parent company, ABC makes most of the money. Disney merchantdising and theme parks account for some of the money, but ABC pays most of it. High school musical is another major source of revenue for disney channel, and it has made over a billion dollars, but this is because of DVD sales, album sales, the musical tour, and other merchandise. Cultural Phenomenoms usually rake in alot of dough, and this one is no exception.

Well for every some amount of money the cable company or t.v. company gets a little portion of it goes to each channel and if you think about it dailey.WOAH yah know because so many people everywhere have cable and t.v.'s so that is how they make profit.
AND
It made over a billion dollars because like I said above some of the money goes to the channel and some of that money goes to each show or channel movie.HSM made over a billion dollars as well because it also is out on DVD and many many many people have bought it.
Also CD sales (that goes for everyother t.v. show on Disney Channel too) and DVD sales and even some like HSM and Hannah Montana have book series so they make profit off of them that way too.They even started coming out with DOLLS!They have bedroom supplies and school stuff as well so they will also make mega bucks off of those too!And they make profit off of people paying to get into their concerts as well.So they have bllions of dollars right there!And not to mention the internet sales and stuff!Plus ABC owns some of Disney Channel so they make money off of that too!Plus all the shout outs they get from teenagers and kids with cells durring the premiers.People really do pay for that stuff!
So that is basically how it works!HOPE I HELPED!

Merchandise and CD sales. Don't forget the theme parks and DVD sales.

The Disney Channel is just a part of a bigger picture. If you've been into a Wal Mart lately, High School Musical is EVERYWHERE. Pillows, sheets, comforter, school supplies...etc. etc.

The previous poster has it backwards...Disney owns ABC and they get plenty of advertising dollars there.

They make **** loads from just advertising their own stuff. If a kid is glued to the disney channel, that's all they want, so their parents will by into the subliminal messages on the tube. That's probably why they only advertise their stuff, so they have no competition on their network.

High school musical is supposed to be as big as grease to children that have no sex drive and parents that are willing to keep their kids from engaging in sexual intercourse. Oh course, it made tons of money. Just think about it....Disney brainwashes the youth and adults of America. I can admit that their classic movies do rule.
Disney=cult.
