I call this snap, crackle, pop. It is more than a pet peeve - I can't stand it. How should I handle it if a person is smacking at the movies or when I get a waitress that does that? Moving to another seat in the movie theatre and you can still hear them. Whatever happened to common courtesy? I think everyone knows it is still not right to chew with your mouth open when eating, why all this gum clicking and popping? I wish it didn't get to me, but it does.

. It's happened a few time. I'm larger than the average bear so I'm not afraid to speak up. BUT I don't expect the guy to behave himself. Then I go elsewhere.
.. an example: In a movie, I'd say , IN A LOUD VOICE, :"Hey buddy. You want to back off a little on that gum-chewing!" Then I'd move to another seat because I sure wouldn't want him behind me in a dark theatre!
As for a waitress, which hasn't happened, I'd look for a name-tag, and then say, " Hey (Janet), you're too pretty to be chewing gum that loud." Then I'd keep looking at her face until she quit.
That way she knows that I know her name, and I gave her a compliment. Sometimes things work out, usually not. That's life.

Suppose your own nervous habit of pulling at your ear lobe drove ME bananas? Just being a smart aleck, haha. This gum chewing on steroids IS annoying. There is really no way to approach perfect strangers and tell them that they look like cattle and sound like a plague of locusts. At the movies, you could just move further away from the chomper. If it's a service person, you might say "I'm sorry, could you repeat that? I got distracted by the chewing gum tricks and lost track of what you were saying."

If it is in the movies you could say in a loud enough voice so that the rude person could hear. "Some people have no manners smacking their gum like that". If it is a waitress I would have the manager come to my table and polietly tell him that the waitress is causing you to lose your appetite by chewing her gum that way.

If is really a big issue
u should try to avoid doing things that is with the public
try waiting for the movies to hit blockbuster to rent it
and try not going to a place where ppl serve you
