I'm only 20 yrs old, and i don't have a credit card. But, why is it that i went to this website for a free credit report: www.annualcreditreport.com, and "equifax" asked me a questionaire to validate if if was I who is requesting the credit report, and it asked me what mortgage do i have in 2000, 2004, 2007 and how much was in the mortgage for that year? What the H3LL ?!?!?. First of all, i have never even touched a credit card nor applied for any mortgage. What is going on here? When i answered "none of the above" to the questions, equifax was not able to give me my credit report. I wanted a credit report to see if it was still clean and unused. But, to find out i have a mortage? I really hope this isn't a matter of identity theft or fraud or whatever, because i care too much for my credit so i can get good things in my future. I don't know how this happened. Maybe, some person used my ss# or driver's license number. Will equifax charge a fee if i call them and verify ?

I've seen other things listed on my credit report besides credit card activity, so even if you don't have any cards, there might still be something to report. None of the above was the right answer, but it didn't work, so....?

That sounds weird to me. Maybe you should call in. I don't see how they can charge you just to ask them simple questions. Just ask them if they deny reports if you don't have credit card history and see what they say. That may settle it right there, or alert you to a problem.

Good luck

Asking about mortgages is one way the credit bureaus verify that you are who you say you are when you're asking for a credit report, since many people do have them. Don't worry, it's a standard question and doesn't mean that someone has used your social security number to get a mortgage.

They probably don't have a file on you if you've never had any credit - that would be why they couldn't give you your report, you don't have one yet.

settle down. first of all, they ALWAYS ask that same question to verify if its you. it DOES NOT mean you have a mortgage on your credit, thats just the standard question. If you dont have a mortgage then answering none of the above was the right thing to do.
there are a number of other reasons why they couldnt show you your credit report. did you take too long to answer the question? or hit your browser's back button?
have you moved recently? if theres a new address on file, theyll need extra verification. or they just might not have enough info on you yet since you say you dont really have any credit. if you have absolutely NO credit....then they dont really have anything to show you now do they?

follow the instructions to send in your request by mail. they will ask you to include copies of photo id, ssn card and current utility bill proving the address you want it sent to is yours. when you receive it and find errors, there will be instructions on how to contact the creditor, and dispute the item on the report. don't ignore your address history. this will be part of the report and could also contain errors. be sure you follow the instructions on how to dispute any and all pieces of info you find that are incorrect. if you do find errors, write a statement to be placed on your report stating you were the victim of fraud or errors, it is being taken care of, and to only extend credit to you in person with photo id.
