Brandy was invented around 1100 or so. Norman (French, more or less) knights conquered and occupied what is now England. The occupying Normans really missed their French wines, but shipping cases of wine over from France was very expensive.

Some clever winemaker or shipper hit on the idea of making "wine concentrate" -- the user could "make" wine by adding water, just like we "make" orange juice from concentrate.

Some folks preferred their "brandy-wine" as concentrate, adding little or no water. Cherry brandy is concentrated cherry wine. Blackberry brandy is concentrated blackberry wine. Cognac is concentrated champagne. I prefer Courvoisier VSOP.

Brandy and Cognac are the same thing. Cognac is named after the region in France. Brandy is the American counterpart. It's like asking if you like scones or tea biscuits better.
