I was reading my brothers' comic books when I was 4. My daughter was reading some when she was 5. They start teaching them some in kindergarten. They should be well on the road to learning to read in first grade when they're 6.

It is realistic for them to read between 5 and a half and 6! Most people i know started reading at that age! No kid reads by him/herself at 3 or 4 unless they are drilled.

If your child speaks by 2, then they should be reading by 4. You can trace the developmental level of the child and teach to that, if the child doesn't speak to 3 or 4, then they will likely not be able to read until 4.

Read to your children and always allow them to see the words on the page from a very young age, this will ensure that they will pick up reading earlier.

My daughter could read beginning books at 3 but when she started Kindergarten, she was the only one who could read, and was reading at a Grade 5 Level. Most of the kids in her class could not read the beginning books until the end of the Kindergarden year which is the average age kids start to read. Although it depends on your school system as not all schools have reading programs in Kindergarden. The reading program that our school has is called Reading Mastery and they teach the kids the sounds of the letters before the names of the letters so that its an easier transition when they start to "sound out" words. I read to my daughter a lot, and bought computer reading games. She also had a Leap Pad which I think helped significantly with her reading skills. My son wasn't into the Leap Pad, so I bought him the Leapster... kind of like a hand held video game but with learning games. Good Luck!

Most kids don't really read, meaning reading well enough to read a simple story on their own and understand what it says and means, until the end of First Grade or the beginning of Second. That's between 6 1/2 and 7. They may be able to decode simple words or memorize a list of sight words before that but until they can use those skills to bring meaning to the written word they aren't really reading.

in singapore children enter formal primary school education at 6 years old. it is expected that the child can read by then.

hence it is a norm that a child should be reading before he enters the school. so working backwards, a child can read when he is at 3-4 years old.

if given enough attention at home, a child can start reading from 2 years old... progressing to more worded books as she get older.

my daughters started to read at 2 years old. at 6 - she did diary of anne frank.

do not give up if your child dun read at that age, but if u have not provided an environment and stimulant for reading, then it is not right.

read to them every day at every opportunity, then they will learn to read fast.....
