That's total bull crap. I am Catholic and you aren't going to hell if you miss a mass. Yes it's good to go there on Sundays, but if you miss one you certainly are not going to hell and they don't teach you that either.

I don't know where you get your information, but I for one would appreciate it if you would stop spreading this stuff all over the net.

If you miss Church, it's OK go to confession, even if you don't go to confession, you still won't go to hell for it. I really hate it when ignorant people spread lies about my religion.

Why on earth would a Catholic WANT to miss Mass? Do you know what happens there? We participate in the Lord's supper. Mass is not a re-creation or stage play, it is when Jesus himself is present in the eucharist. He said 'this is my body'; He instituted the Last Supper and we have been participating in that Last Supper ever since. By 'we' I mean of course the Catholic Church.

If a person misses, then they go to confession. It is pretty simple.

As a side note: Regarding the bible and Catholics, just a few clarifications here:

1. At every Mass we read the bible. We read from the Old Testament AND the Psalms AND the Gospels. So, I do take issue with the idea that Catholics don't read or follow the bible.

2. I would encourage everyone to read the small book "Where we got the bible" by Rev. Henry G Graham. The Catholics didn't 'add books' if you checkout history all 73 books were part of the bible until the reformation.

God Bless!

PS. Where did you see that in the Catechism? I checked in mine and couldn't find it?

Wrong on the comment that the Catholics having the Bible first. It was had by the Jews first, the Catholics added books to the OT that the Jews had dismissed as not being of Sacred authorship. The so called Apocrypha, and the Protestants removed the books of questionable authorship from their Bibles and retained the Old Testament as it was and still is considered valid by all Jews. And though the Roman Catholics have the same New Testament Canon they do not place the same emphasis on the Bible as the Protestants. In fact the Roman Catholic Church states that the Papal Edicts (called Bull ) are of more authority than the Bible.

Seeing that I am not Catholic, maybe I shouldn't answer this question, but I will give it a shot anyway.

I have strong differences with my Catholic Brethren on many of The Catholic Churches Doctrines, and this one would be the least of my differences.

If someone consistently absents himself/herself from Church, I would question their Commitment to Christ, and their Salvation,(speaking as a non Catholic).

If a person loves his/her Church enough to identify with it,IE:Be a Member, then they should attend more than Christmas, and Easter. If someone claims to be a Christian they will want to be with other Christians, Worshiping our Savior a bit more often than Christmas, and Easter.

So, while I disagree with most of what The Catholic Church teaches, I can identify with this particular stand they have taken. Of course missing just one Mass, well, I still see their point.

Edit: I do not believe in "Catholic Bashing" and refuse to engage in it. I also do not believe that The Catholic Church is "The Beast of Revelation" those who say this are poorly informed on Biblical Prophecy. The Beast is The Antichrist, who will be a mohammedan, and The Great Harlot is the Secular Church, IE: Catholic, and Protestant; who rejected God's WORD, and miss The Rapture.

I added this because of the incorrect anticatholic Posts that answered your Question. I may of gotten a little long winded, I get that way sometimes, sorry.

It would help you a great deal if you were to look at the bigger picture.

A person MUST be in a state of sanctifying grace when they die if they are to go to heaven. Mortal sin takes away this state of sanctifying grace. It severes the bond between th sinner and God.

Consider what is needed for a sin to be mortal:
1) It must entail grave matter. Keeping the Sabbath Holy is one of the Ten Commandments.

2) The sinner must know skipping mass for no good reason constitutes grave matter.

3) Despite this knowledge, the sinner freely chooses to skip mass regardless.

Hell is real and people end up there, not because they were forced to against their will - but because they freely chose hell by committing mortal sin.

What a noob Bianca is, she proll'y left the church like Susanna did when she was 8. "Not supported by Scripture" -- yeah whatever. Every Catholic knows that Purgatory is a place of final cleansing.

Well you have some facts wrong that I know... the Catholic church goes back to the original One Way church, but it chose to make Peter the head of the church instead of Christ, and from that day....it has been wrong in a number of things.

Going to hell has nothing to do with going to mass, no matter what they teach. You need to listen to God instead Who tells you how you will get to heaven or hell. It is a choice to follow Christ, and ask Him to be your personal Savior that will get you to heaven. To get to hell, you don't have to do anything at all because God says if you don't choose to follow my Son and accept his death for your sins personally, then you are already condemned for all eternity.

Jesus came to die for you and for me, because we could not save outselves. Catacism and "church" won't save you. Believing that Jesus died for you, and telling Him you want Him to forgive your sins and choose to follow Him will!

Your church knows some of the truth, but has perverted it into traditions, purgatory, etc....which are not what God says is the answer. Pay attention! Read John 3:16 and 17.

And yes, the church teaches a lot of things most people have no idea of. So get a Bible...a truly translated one....and read it for yourself!

Keep the Sabbath holy is one of the 10 commandments,
I think we should try to go to a church, or
try to worship God on the Sabbath even in our own homes with other believers if possible.I don't see it documented anywhere in the bible that we go to hell if we miss going to Mass/church.
The original Christian churches were in
people's homes and catacombs, hiding from
the Romans who wanted to kill them up. That is why Paul was in prison and why the christians were fed to the lions.

Most Catholic churches have Mass everyday.

Missing mass is considered a mortal sin, which means that it must be confessed and absolved. That does not mean that missing mass condemns you to hell, end of story. In Roman Catholicism, there are some sins that require the rite of absolution, and missing mass (for no reason) is one of them.
As for the first answer, it is simply not true that most denominations condemn folks to hell for missing Church.
