It is a Psalm of praise...and that is what the writer is doing... it is also for those of The Faith as an example of praise to God.

Mostly because of tradition, since KJV used to be the only one out there and people attach a sense of 'originality' to it. But you are right, KJV has some drawbacks, the fact the the language style is not current and easily understandable, and ya everytime something gets translated from one language to another, something gets lost or changed. That's why we need the Lord as light shining on the Word as we read the Word. Be it KJV or any other version, if we read it without the Lord, it'll just be like dead letters. We need the divine shining. "39You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that testify concerning Me. 40Yet you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life." John 5: 39-40

Psalms 100:1-5 means to me...
We must praise the Lord with our entire hearts, for He made us and we are His. We need to give Him the praise that He is sooo worthy of.

We were predestinated! ....
Ephesians 1
4. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love

Psalms 100
3. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

That I should not refrain from or water down my praise for the Lord for fear of embarrasment or ridicule. That He loves me and I am His no matter what is going on around me. He is merciful towards me and I am to love Him openly without shame. My children can receive the same blessings and protection that I have received.

To me?
That the Children of Israel were to be joyful before there God, that they should willingly serve their God in all of their lands, that they should enter into temple with singing and praise for all the goodness and mercy that their God had and has shown them. That they should be ever mindful that God made them and that they are his like the sheep belong to the shepherd.
