It has to be popular so I won't have too hard of a time finding it. Any genre is fine, as long as it's not about Muay Thai...I've watched too many action movies recently. Also if it's in Issan, even better, I won't have to read the subtitles...but if it's in Thai that's fine too.

Thanks!

The mother of all Thai movies is King Naresuan, it's a trilogy about Thailand's fight with Burma and resettlement into Ayuttaya. This is the greatest movie ever made in Thailand and broke all the box office records. It is an amazing story and I am sure you will enjoy this.

I am not about to recommend these but they are the Thai movies I have, I'm sure others can comment. I tried to look for movies that had english subtitles.

The legend of Suriothai
Phra-Apai-Mani
Mekhong Full Moon Party
Krai Thong
Iron Lady (comedy)
Samuri Resurrection
The Communion (ghost/horror story)
Navy Boys (I think I saw this on the bus and I don't speak Thai but it was very funny)
Someone provided the link below and I bought some films from them. I just buy em I'm not really sure of the quality till I watch them. I have a region 1 dvd player and had to find the override codes because some of the DVDs are region 3 so I haven't watched most of them..

if you look for popular movie, no doubt King naresuan is the most popular one in Thailand as visualthailand said. But Apichatpong is the most recognized Thai movie director and his works are great! You have to watch at least one.

Mysterious Object at Noon
Worldly Desires
Tropical Malady
Blissfully Yours
Syndromes and a Century

You will be impressed, I am sure.

Hi! Chigga, why don't you try "Seasons Change"? The film, released in 2006, is about a high school boy who decides to attend a musical school instead of a medical school that his father always dream of. However, he doesn't pick the school because he likes music, but a girl.

In this film, you'll see real Thai parents' thoughts. You'll also enjoy the classical music played by real Thai students.

Honestly, I don't want to tell you too much about the film. I just want you to find out more by yourself. I hope the film will warm your heart and free you to the reality of Thai society.

Yam Yasothon
This was a really funny movie with a lot of heart. If you get the chance, you should see it. The production quality isn't great, but it doesn't matter, the movie had me laughing the whole time. Any guy who's ever tried to get a girl that's out of his league, or if you ever felt like you let the right girl get away, you'll relate to this movie. A lot of great characters, like the poor monk everyone takes advantage of, or the handsome guy from the rich family. Overall a good love story, with a lot of really funny moments. Thais have a great sense of humor about themselves and their culture, and this movie is a great example of that sense of humor.

I second what twelve said. Yam Yasothorn sounds like what you'd be looking for. Mam is a really talented comedian who wrote and directed as well as starred in this film as a throwback to Thai cinema of the 1960s and in tribute to Isaan. It's very colourful and over-the-top. I still see it for sale where DVDs are sold.

Muay Thai and an Isan lead actor ... that movie is Ong Bak.

The lead actor's partner ("cousin") in Ong Bak (I forgot his name) is a famous comedian and early this year released a movie where he played the Thai equivalent of 007 ... but he lived a double life. So, he was under the thumb of his hair dresser wife (who had a lot of sexual urges our hero couldn't satisfy) when off-duty upcountry. Since the actors changed to Isan when the action didn't take place in Bangkok, everybody in the audience understood where "upcountry" was supposed to be.

A very funny movie. But I forgot its name.
