I am trying to build a helicopter out of a couple of old mountain bikes. I don't want to get very high, because of the saftey issue, but is it possibleto get somewhat of a lift-off?

Sorry to disappoint you, but we are not strong enough for that.

In short we dont have the power to weight ratio for the task. You will need some source of external power to aid you for a lift off.

nah but if you got a small motorcycle engine or even a lawnmower engine you could for sure do it

You could get some weather baloons off ebay or just large baloons and rent a tank/s of helium from a party store and use helium balloons to assist a mountain bike powered helicopter though, get just enough ballons that you come down if not pedaling but when you pedal you'll go up. tricky part would be keeping the ballons out of the rotor but if you put the ballons low and the rotor high it could be done

A gyro-glider maybe.
You cannot possibly develope enough power to lift a helicopter.

Yes but you gotta make sure you get the right kind of crank and everything because you need to get the blades spinning fast enough

Been done before but its not a helicopter, its a gyrocopter, look it up and you would be amazed the lift you can get

Yes -- google 'The Kremer Prize'. Keep in mind that these units may be man-powered but are totally impractical.

with strong legs you might do that. and a good mechanical knowledge plus some expensive helicopter blades, and alot more costly parts, good luck

Yes. You need to produce 0.8 hp of pedal power.

Sure, like pedaling drugs to come up with enough money to build one with an engine, dah..........

it is possible, but probably impractical due to the amount of legwork (pedaling) involved. but yes it could be done
