My steering column has a little movement to it, and I recently took my car down to an auto shop to have a bunch of work done. They had to call 5 places to take a look at it, and 4 out of the 5 said they wouldnt even touch it. The other guys said he would take it apart and fix it but that it would take a week. What is it that makes these steering columns so undesirable to work on?

Mustangs aren't that difficult, you should look for a place that specializes in Mustangs

You may find this group of Mustangers helpful. Most of them are do-it-yourselfers

These are really easy to fix, there is a bushing on the bottom of the column where it exists the firewall. On the top there is a bearing that gets "pre-load" from a tapered sleeve.
The looseness could be the tapered sleeve backed out. Get a steering wheel puller and a repair manual and start at it, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to work on.

Is this a place that specializes in antique cars? I can imagine the places they called weren't.

I bet they just lack experience. People that maintain new cars never touch the steering columns. That's something a gearhead does at home.

Usually something that old will incur broken parts in a disassembly process and then the shop may have to eat the cost of replacing those parts. Finding the parts are probably next to impossible, check around salvage yards, locally or nationwide.

its all the bearings and parts in them that people done like messing with, most of the time you can buy a re-built column for one cheaper than you can get one re-built,that's especially true with prices of parts being way up they way they are right now,you might want to check in to a good re-built one,i,ll give you a site that has some real good parts and prices on it,good luck with it, http://larrysmustangparts.com/
