There actually isn't a worm in any tequila.

By law in Mexico, it's not allowed.

What you're referring to is Mezcal, an entirely different type of alcohol, which happens to also be distilled from agave cactus like tequila.

The worm, too, is not really a worm, it's a larva, and usually only put into cheap gimicky bottles of Mezcal so drunk US college kids can claim they "ate the worm".

Personally, I wouldn't touch cheap Mezcal or a worm with a 10' pole!

And you can't really get drunk just from eating the larva; think about it. It's pretty small, and even if it's completely soaked up in alcohol, that's less than a tablespoon of liquor. If you get nasty after-affects from it, it probably has more to do with the fact that you ate a bug.

This is a common misconception.

Tequila is an agave spirit made in the Mexican state of Jalisco and never contains the Agave snout weevil or the Caterpillar of the hypopta agavis moth, either of which can be "the worm". By Mexican law Tequila cannot contain these "worms."

Some Mezcals (the general term for agave distillates) from the state of Oaxaca do contain these insects as a marketing gimmick. The insects are also eaten as a delicacy and can be found on restaurant menus in the region.

"The worm" is like any insect. It is mealy and high in protein and sort of tasteless. No worse than an Earthworm or an African Cockroach. Being soaked for a long time in that strong alcohol pretty much kills the taste.

As for getting drunk on the worm, it is one little insect (in a whole bottle). It has about the same impact as a liquor filled chocolate. Which is to say "the same as nothing."

no, but I have eaten the worm at the bottom of Mezcal. Just eating the worm will not mess You up or get You drunk. The worm tastes like the Mezcal. I cant explain the texture but its not nasty. Here is a tip for getting the worm without drinking the whole bottle. Remove the bottle top and place Your tongue over the top of the bottle. Turn bottle upside down while keeping it sealed with Your tongue. Wait until You feel the worm land on Your tongue. Move your tongue. Your mouth will fill up with Mezcal and the worm will sink into Your mouth. Swallow the Mezcal and not the worm. Then eat the worm.

Yes of course. They're good.
In fact, Tequila is not suposed to have a worm. It is Mezcal, a kind of Tequila not made in Tequila (Mexico), rather made in Oaxaca or other parts.
Tequila is made of a sort of maguey plant known as blue agave. Tequila is only made in Tequila, just as Cognac is in Cognac, France.
Mezcal is made from many other subspecies of agave, so there is a little difference in flavor.
Many mezcal bottles include a worm or two, which you can eat safely an get a lot of proteins to get stand up for the party.
Eating it it's just as eating a tinny piece of white meat.
You bet You won't get drunk just eating the little poor drowned worm.

Demian is right. Mezcal has the worm not Tequila.I eaten several and the myths are just that. I didn't hallucinate or grow a third eye. I've also eaten a Vodka scorpion on a bet. Chewy and nasty. Won't do that again.

I was so drunk by the time I decided to eat the worm...I really couldn't say. I didn't chew it, I swallowed it whole.
