i've looked at some of the other topics/questions on this board and none of them seem to be able to ease my apprehension about my new tattoo, so please forgive me if this question has been asked a million times...

i just got my tattoo last wednesday so i've had it for 9 days. i put antibiotic ointment on it (as my tattoo artist said) and then i switched to lotion. there has been some scabbing and i can't tell if it is healing properly. i included a link to a picture of my tattoo (it's on the back of my neck in dark brown ink). some areas of the tattoo appear to be in better shape than the rest of it (the two dots, for example) and i wanted to know if this was typical or not.

i'd really appreciate any advice!

thanks!

It looks like the artist may have gone a little too deep in a couple spots, but it looks ok. If it gets really red in the surrounding area, and the redness starts spreading, that may be cause for concern.

Make sure you're not scratching it. The left part of the tatt looks like its been scratched at or they went a little deep with the needle. I don't see any puss or anything like that which is great cause it means no infection (take time to pat yourself on the back for using the antibiotic and lotion. that's always key). If you're really worried, always stop in to see your artist or any artist for that matter. I'm sure they'll check it out for you.

Also. If you're not allergic to tattoo goo or similar products, invest. They're made specifically to help the healing of your new tatt.

Now, it will remain red, and it will start itching (if not already). Try not to use scented soap on your neck and keep shampoo away from it just to make sure.

All in all! Great tatt and nice choice. Good artist!

Yes, it seems to be healing rather nicely. Hmm, what exactly is that?

You can always go back to your artist if you have questions. They should be able to help you figure out if it is healing properly.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PULL OFF THE SCABS. Pulling the scabs will make the ink fall out of the tattoo and ruin it for life. Not to mention you will have to go get it re-done.

Yeah, It looks like its healing fine. Tattoos scab first then after a few weeks the ink settles in and it takes a solid look. Until then its going to look sketchy and like the guy did a crap job. Also If you go in water for periods of time any longer then a shower it can also irritate the healing process and mess things up. My tattoo looked the same way but now its a solid, and has the tint and color like it was supposed to have. Hope for the best!;)

a tat should never have a noticble scar.. like if you skinned your knee. The scabbed blood will pull the ink out, it means your artist went too deep.

A tat will typically peel like a sunburn several times in the healing process, use water based lotions, nothing with bees wax or petroleum as those can keep the are too moist "pulling" out the ink. I would be concerned about the ink being too deep in those areas and causing shadowing around your tat, thats where the ink gets UNDER the dermis and seeps into surrounding tissue causing a dark halo like area around the tat.

looks like it's healing nicely. but never put A&D lotion on a tat again. that's stupid. it just covers the tat with a film, doesn't let the tat breath and stains your clothes. use baby lotion. it let's the tat breath, but gives enough moisture to keep it from itching and having it scab poorly. usually tat's take me about 2 full weeks to heal, but that's a smaller one and mainly an outline, so it should be fine in about 10 days. but again, everyone heals differently. so don't worry about it, unless the ink starts bleeding out.

it s normal for a tattoo to infect because it is a wound but as long as take good care of it like applying iodine it is ok it will heal in 2 to 3 weeks.

It does not look to good from where I'm sitting. Put some A and D ointment on it for a couple days.
