Well Im talking 38 years ago, and Id imagine that the qualifications have changed some since then. It used to be that you just had to be the best in your company.
Usually a PFC rank was given to the best man in each platoon, this was based on overall scores from every aspect of your training, from the physical fitness tests to the rifle range.
Then the company also gave the PFC rank to the top scorer from the rifle range.
The company commander could promote as many as 8 men per 300 man company.
NO you do not need a college degree or ROTC to earn PFC from bootcamp! You could have all that going for you and still score worse than any other Marine.
In fact we had two guys in my platoon who finished 2 year hitches in the Army and were both seargents (they lose those stripes in boot training) neither of them got PFC stripes and both of them barely got through our training!

Work real hard, pay close attention and be highly motivated; the "Drills" love a highly motivated recruit, that could easily get you extra points and perhaps a quick promotion to PFC.
WHen you go through Boot Camp, they'll be yelling at you a lot and you'll think that it is all directed at you; don;t worry, is something all recruits go through; just take a deep breath, look straight forward and be highly motivated when you respond to every question the "Drills" give you with a "Sir, Yes Sir" or Ma'am, Yes Ma'am.

Good luck and show them what you got.

Ask the recruiter-more then one way to do it but the easiest is to help the recruiter and refer some people to him that join. College courses can also get you that guaranteed, in boot camp a limited number of the "outstanding" recruits are promoted on graduation. Best thing is talk to the recruiter and he will let you know to do it.

DI's look for leadership. Become a squad leader or guide. You will work harder and it will seam as if the DI's will never give you a break. It will be hard. You will have to watch out for the other recruites, keep them in line when the DI isn't on deck and take responsibility for your actions and theirs.
Good luck. it wont be easy, but that's the Marines.

Work hard, study hard. Graduate top in your company. Or, talk to your recruiter and get it in writing.
Perris Island or San Diego?
Boot camp can actually be fun! Remember that their jobs (the Drill Instructors) is to weed out the non-hackers -- those who are going to be a liability. And, they are there to train you so that you can survive and grow. The yelling is to desensitize you. The P.T. is to make you strong -- believe me, you will be in the best shape of your life when you march across that grinder. Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut.

hey Doc she's a girl so she can only go to Parris Island.

Like everybody else said graduate at the top. Qualify as a rifle expert, top PFT score, and becoming the Guide helps too. But being the Guide takes alot out of you and require alot of discipline holding that guide-on. woo wee i stayed in back and brought no attention to myself

Good luck

I asked my recruiter the very same question today, and he said that I could either work really hard or go to college for two years first. But, if you wanted to wait six months, you would be promoted automatically.
