Is it true that if I've had a DUI I would be disqualified from joining the air force???? But I also heard that it's possible to get a waiver so I could still join????

My boyfriend was also wondering if his asthma would disqualify him......... and he was also wondering about the non-offensive tattoos he has on both forearms.......

Generally if you have something that is considered disqualifying (anything from medical to physical to moral)..... isn't there a way to get around most things??? With waivers and what not????

I know major medical reasons can not get waivers..... but things like DUI's???? are they able to get waivers????

The Air Force especially is granting almost NO waivers whatsoever.

The Asthma.. if it is past age 13, he;s DQd permanently form all Branches, no waivers authorized.

The Tatts: possible DQ, depending on whether they can be hidden while in uniform. if gang related.. they are PDQ. Army might grant a waiver for them

the DUI: no go for most branches, depending on how long ago it was and what you have done since then. AF will not grant waivers, nor will Navy. Marines and Army..might.

A DUI charge would be more difficult to get around in joining the service than tattoos. As long as the military uniform will cover up the tattoos you can have them - and recently, even tattoos that are visible in uniform can be waivered.

However, asthma, depending on if he needs an inhaler he carries is grounds for disqualification. Generally, asthma that resolves after childhood age is not grounds for disqualification. But if he currently has asthma and carries an inhaler, he won't be given a waiver.

I suggest talking to a recruiter about your DUI charge. There are ways around a lot of things. If you really want to get in they may be able to work something out. I've seen it done.

If you only had the one conviction, you can probably get a waiver. But, you cannot join if you are currently on probation or parole. Asthma might be an obstacle, depending on the severity. The tattoos could be a problem. I'm an Air Force vet, and when I was in you could not get a tattoo which showed while you were in uniform. I don't know if that has changed, or if they make exceptions for tattoos you get before you join.

Go to the Air Force website and have a recruiter contact you. He'll be able to answer your questions.

Asthma past age 12 is disqualifying for enlistment or appointment. Source is below. The DUI is something you should discuss with a recruiter.

I certainly hope that a DUI would keep you out of the Air Force. As for asthma, that's a medical judgement that I'm sure the AF has made tens of thousands of times - ask a recruiter. Tattoos? I wouldn't care, but I'm not the AF.

The standards to get into the Air Force has risen due to downsizing. If you wanted to join the Army or Marines, I'm sure that they will take you.
