The majority of society, including politicians, and the military decision makers have believed that having strong sexual ties to your comrades in battlefield combat conditions would negatively affect the readiness of those individuals and thus degrade the effectiveness of those individuals and units that those individuals serve in--thus a lot of soldiers could get killed. To be more specific, it is why there are no female combat units in the US military. It is believed that male and female soldiers would be having sex in combat situations (thus negatively effecting their ability to wage war), or if a woman (or man) were to be injured / killed the member of the unit who is his / her lover would be put in too-high a stressful situation, might not be able to perform his / her job, et cetera.
The same would apply to male or female homosexuals in the military. The US military (and most if not all effective militaries in the world) are not in the business of promoting sexuality in any form. They are in the business of defending national interests. The sexuality issue is really not so much about being gay or straight as it is about not distracting soldiers with the sexual relations that would interfere with their ability to perform their jobs.

Well the reasoning is that in the army when you join they have them all sleeping in the same areas. There are no privet shower stalls. That means that when you are showering and so on anyone can see your naked body. It would be kinda like if men and women had to shower together and use the same bathrooms. Would you want guys looking at you why you showered, or while you were changing clothes. Not to mention sleeping in the same room as you sleep wearing only your underwear. That is one of the main reasons that they do not like gay men or women serving in the military.

Why did you forget gay women? Are you some kind of a self hating sexist?
Gay men can join the army, but they can't practice being homosexual or talk abou it when they get in. Kind of like being a priest. You can be what you are but you can't do what you are.

They can, but they can't be *openly* gay (hence "don't ask, don't tell"). Current army regulations won't allow it, because it's still considered a moral defect. Silly, isn't it? The army has discharged several *really* competent translators, when they *need* translators, because they came out of the closet.

This depends who's army.
Some societies encouraged men to have sex with men when on long assignments.
This kept the men more content and orderly.
Most modern armies frown on homosexual relations; they believe people who participate in this type of activity are more susceptible to bribery and cohersion into treason.
Good Luck.

They can but its the don't ask don't tell thing. I think it has to with the army thinking that it would distract the guy by looking at other men.

You can join the Military if your gay. But if you tell some one then they will kick you out. Its kinda like a; "We don't ask, so you don't tell" sorta thing. You keep it to yourself and you will be fine and no one will worry.
