We have had people leaving at an alarming rate from my work, and a mass number of brithdays. So awhile ago, it was decided that we would start a collection every week to cover the cost of brithday cakes and going away gifts.
It was decided that we would all contribute $1 a week and that we would spend $10 on a card and a brithday cake, and $20 on a present when someone leaves.
Before this collection started we had one girl leave, who has since returned, and when she left we all contributed $3 to buy her a cherry ripe mud cake from the cheescake shop and a card, and we put all the fancy sparklers in the cake and made this huge fuss & then she was only gone for 5 weeks.
Then since the collection a few people have left and they have all had afternoon teas and presents.
Well today is my last day, and I got leftover cake from a welcome morning tea yesterday and a card. Not that I care if I get a gift or not, it's just that they made such a huge fuss about the whole collection thing.

Does this seem hypocritcal to you. I have half a mind to take back the money I have contributed when I leave today.

Polly: I don't care either way. The whole Point I am trying to make is why make a huge song and dance about having a collection, if it isn't going to be used for everyone? I happily contribute, but it just seems like they are using the money to 'choose' whom they use it for.

I would be irritated, at the very least. On your last day, you should expect your own cake, not a left over one. Also, you actually should expect cards and gifts because you pitched in to make sure others were treated with that kind of respect on their special day.

I certainly wouldn't have made that last contribution, however, I would just forget about getting it back if it has already been paid. My suggestion is that you write a farewell email in which you poke some fun at the wonderful cake, cards and gifts they got you.

I would just let it drop and be glad you are leaving that place. It sounds to me that your employer is not the best one in the world they should have a little money put aside for peoples birthdays and once a month celebrate everyones at the same time. That would keep some of the cost down and they would not be having a party every other day for someone. When someone is leaving I think just getting them a card and letting everyone in the office sign it is perfectly fine. I say just drop it and move on. Why worry about it now? Your time there is over and I would just be glad about it.

Your employer should pay for these things. I say, take the high road and move on. It's your last day! Now is not the time to feel jilted. You're done with that place. Let it go.

Oh that is so stupid. Everyone should get the same thing - or at least something new. If your turnover is that high (and it sounds as if it is) then co-workers shouldn't even do the collection thing any longer.

To answer your question, yes this is hypocritical.

It sounds tacky. Wave goodbye as you leave and be happy you're going. The company should pay for these things -- not the employees.
