Religion is not there to cause Fear or Take it away. It is a social construct of practices and customs to enjoin members of community together.

According to definition - A religion is a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people, often codified as prayer, ritual, and religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction.

The problem is that in most cases, Religion is becoming more and more outdated as it is unable to explore itself beyond their heritage and history. There is no commonality in the Divine; merely consensus. However, people dependent on Religion to make a living have to exploit human emotions such as fear or hope for their salaries.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. For most of us our first draw to the Word of God is fear of an eternity in hell. After we grow as Christians and learn how gracious and merciful our Heavenly Father is , as we walk in His will, it does take away fear. We begin to rest in Him. Fear does serves a purpose at times. If a child doesn't have a healthy sense of fear or caution, they can end up in all kinds of trouble.

Sometimes I am really surprised with people's notion about religion.
In my religion(orthodox) you are not told ''if you do that you go straight to hell!!''....

In my opinion the priests & the church(catholic in general) are using the bible the way they feel like it...pushing and forcing people towards God..
But that is not free will..is no surprise many thurn their back to God..because the way they are preached...

We had a story once in a church in Romania..about punisment and forgiveness...
At the judgement day God spoke to a very bad person, who had only sinns..but god discovered that in his life did just a good thing...
Because of one good deed his sins have been forgiven...

So you see my religion doesn't cause fear..it gives you hope in becoming a better person...

this is a no brainer. Religion is here to cause fear. If it wasn't you wouldn't be threatened by eternal fire, wrath of god, fiery stories about the jealois vengeful god of the old testament and the book of revelations. I don't know that much about other religions to give equally good examples but religion runs on the premise of punishment for whatever they define as evil and reward for whatever they define as good. It is a self oiling machine. It gets them recruits and it keeps the members in place using the same tactics

Dosn't the bible say to fear god? People may say it's to take away, but they sure use the "fear" factor to try to get converts.

Last I heard, it was like 60% of Americans believe there is a God.

It's no secret. People are religious. Atheists have humanism. Ancient tribes have waterfalls or trees. Most everybody else has whom they call God. They know that God is real, and they want to know who He is. Religion provides the most thorough explanations, so that's what they turn to.

Religions build on human frailties and insecurities...including fear of the unknown and fear of rejection by your social group.
