I think there should be a universal shoppers card, and that is all you have to carry around. Who wants to volunteer to get this started?

The only ones I use are the ones that let you provide your phone number instead of showing the card. I love getting the discounts associated with those shopper cards...MUCH better way of saving money than clipping coupons! However, I REFUSE to carry around those cards in my wallet and or on my key ring. If the company allows me to take advantage of the discounts without having the card with me (and many do), I'm fine with that.

Remember that frequent shopper cards are a reward for providing information to the company to aid it in customer relationship management. That's why they make you fill out an "application" for each card with various "personal" information. This information combined with register data about your purchases, they can make decisions to improve their relationship with you. If you don't want to provide this information then you shouldn't expect the same rewards that someone who is might receive!

A universal shoppers card is actually possible in the near future. When stores get to the point where many of them have implemented smart card technology, it will be possible for all of us to have a card that contains all the type of information requested on the application AND the ability to store new information. Filling out an application would be a simple matter of scanning the card and extracting the information and then placing the identifying information for your account on the card for each account you want! Such a card could also be used to store medical information (only available to card readers with your approval of course)...just imagine how much time and hassle it would save if you never had to fill out another ridiculous form to see a doctor!
