remote release by the driver,s door) and the latch was very stiff. I tugged it and the trunk unlocked but wouldn't latch closed. Also, the remote latch stuck in the up position. Tugging on the cable at the lock resulted in the lock latching but the same thing happened again. Since the key hasn't worked in that lock for six months, I now can't open the trunk. The dealer said that problem wasn't caused by them when they replaced the seat belt. What do you think?

I think everyone has the right answer. That's no coincidence, providing the trunk release worked before the seat belt repair. Go talk to someone at the dealer, and if they give you a hard time, tell them you want to speak to a manager. The customer is always right!! The squeeky wheel gets the oil!! Tell them it's very obvious that they screwed it up, and the least they can do is check it out for you for no charge! Tell them you are confident that if they check there work, they will find the problem. Just remember you get furthur without an attitude! Please post the result as I am curious! Good luck!

I used to be a toyota service advisor and the first answer is absolutely correct. The cable for the trunk release latch runs right there! I'm sure when the took it apart to replace the seat belt, they messed it up. They should fix it, should be an easy fix, just take it back apart and reinstall it correctly.

I think they caught the trunk cable under the seat belt bolt when they reassembled. Take the car back in or do the investigation your self with a mechanic of your choosing and video tape what the mechanic finds. Either hold the tape over the dealership to get a new trunk cable or just the threat of you doing a tape of what your mechanic finds inder the seat belt bolt? Hey we mechanics get in a hurry and sometimes make a mistake.

NICE try inexperienced dealer.
Of course they did, the cable runs past the seat belt area. I bet to save some bucks and learn a lesson you can just remove the cover on the pillar post, loosen the belt attachment and see where the cable is pinched,

Or get some cable lube from the parts store and lube the cable while the cover is off. I bet if you remove it and see the pinch then take pictures of it before you fix it yourself take that to the dealer and say I want YOU to pay me for your mistake.
I'd love to hear the result.

from my experience in car audio for 20 years the problem was quite likely brought on by the dealership doing the work. at the very least they should open it up and check it for you no charge.
