I think it is great to be bilingual, however requiring Americans to speak Spanish it taking it a bit over the top. The required language has always been English, and until such time as the Government sees fit to change it, I think it should remain. Also I am doubtful that 90% of Americans are mixed with Hispanics. I think that number is way too high.

No, we need one language and that language is English for good or bad. Being you asked about have Spanish being equal to English, a would assume you either came from a Spanish speaking country or your parents have, how would like to newcomers in your country demand that say French be equal to Spanish. I am saying newcomers because English has never been challenged on the level it is now. I know that in Cuba the Spanish language is in the Constitution as the official language of the country, are there other countries such as Mexico that have the same laws
PS people can speak whatever language they want, but English should be the language of the government

No we should not speak Spanish. I for one have no desire to go back to Mexico and that would be the only reason I would need to speak Spanish. And as far as 90% of Americans mixed with Hispanics - you wish.

This is a very touchy subject for a lot of people, and I don't want to sound like a racist when I say this because I couldn't be farther from that, but if people are going to come to America (the land of English speaking people) then they should be required to learn English before they ever step foot on our land.
If people should choose to learn how to speak Spanish, then that's wonderful, but it shouldn't be a requirement!!
Different countries speak different languages, and don't expect other countries to learn their's, so why should we? If you wanna speak Spanish, go to Mexico!!

I assume you mean 'mixed' as in 'live in communities that include hispanics?'
But, no. While it would be beneficial if Americans took learning foreign languages more seriously, they should not focus exclusively on Spanish.

Well, aside from the fact that your statistic is nonsense, there is no money in our education funds to make our own children fluent in any other language. As it is our own children's education programs have been cut across the board to provide ESL and intervention programs to the millions of children of those illegally here. The result is that the children of those illegally here come out of school bilingual and more employable than our own less educated, and can 'demand' that the rest of us who didn't get our own money spent on our own children's education, must learn their language.
There is something basically inequitable about this.

HUH? where did you decide 90% of americans are mixed with hispanics? What would that matter? This is an english speaking country( not official) but very much a larger percentage of it here. Maybe it should go the other way and people should learn to speak Englsih before they come here?

wow 90%??? that seems kind of hard to believe when not even 25% of US citizens are Hispanic. where did you find that piece of information?
and no i don't think it should be manatory for one to speak Spanish here in the USA. but i do think that knowing another language or two or three is benefical.
