Possibly but anyone in the military could "see combat" when serving in a combat zone whatever their occupation. Our friend's mother has a son who just returned from a tour in S Africa as a Seebee and he willl be deployed for his 3rd tour in Afganistan in 1 month.
He tells us he didn't have direct contact with a combat force but his unit picked up the pieces from explosions that were on airbases and within our sea ports.
His degree is Engineering so it is logical for one who wanted to join the military to enhance his degree learning as a seebee...Of course there are so many other ways but he wanted to be outside and not behind a desk.

Any member of the Armed Services may see combat, and Seabees tend to go into areas where they see more direct combat than most Sailors.
The Seabees have two mottos. There is the official one, "Can Do!" and the unofficial one, "First we dig 'em, then we die in 'em."
The first one is almost always true, the second one is true all too often. It's a tough, dangerous and vital job, performed by a brave and dedicated bunch of Sailors.

We have lost Seabees in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Mostly from IEDs going off underneath their construction equipment or that equipment coming into contact with anti-personnel mines.
Along with members of the Navy Medical Department and the Chaplain Corps, the Seabees undergo infantry training with the Marines.
