He was a brilliant man, if he wanted code, he could have come up with something a bit more secretive. Leonardo was illegitimate, he wasn't given top notch schooling. Even though I'm sure he knew the correct way to write, he wasn't forced to do it correctly all the time.

All old dip pens cannot be pushed, only pulled, which makes them very difficult for left handers, which he was. So, I figure he learned to write the correct way, and then found it much easier to use his left hand to write backwards, which is surprisingly easy and actually possible with dip pens. I do it myself. It's not hard to write that way or read. And for his own personal journals, why wouldn't he do something much more comfortable than forcing himself to write correctly?

Because he could? Or to conceal the contents from prying eyes? Or maybe it was because he generally wrote that way due to a difference in how his brain dealt with spatial relationships.

violinagin is correct - it was easier. He was left-handed.
