In the New Testament, John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he sent his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

In the Old Testament, the Twenty Third Psalm, which is used at many, many funerals. It starts, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want...."

It would be pretty difficult to pick out just one verse that is the most "commonly known" to all. The Old Testament is very important to Jewish people, the New Testament to Christians.

"Hope springs eternal in the human breast." ("Pope" Alexander)

"A thing of Beauty is a joy forever." (John "3:16" Keats)

"The quality of mercy is not strained." William Shakespeare

People have actually attributed these and other gems of English literature to the Bible.

One of my favorites is one that is very often misquoted as, "Pride goeth before a fall."

The actual quote is: "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

John 3:16. That was the first verse they pounded into my head as a kid in Sunday school.
