The car doesnt actually feel any different or get any louder when i drive it. It only makes the sound when it idles. Is that a sign of something serious?

Idle speed knocking from the valve cover front of engine area is the timing chain guide has broken off and your engine really needs some work done... Ignore the loose chain and it will wear a hole in the timing chain cover and oil will start leaking or worse yet oil leaking you keep driving and that chain wears a hole in the water pump passage and water gets into your oil. The sound is kind of klunking sound and is not present at higher engine speeds.

If your car is a high mileage car then it might be a piston starting to knock. But I would say check your oil level if its low your engine might be knocking there is no oil or very little oil in it.Or it might not be anything serious might just be some hose, wire, metal or anything it may be hitting against something in your engine causing it to make this noise.Well hope this helps

Try putting some premium gas into it and running that through for a tank or two. Sometimes low quality gas can cause a knocking sound, but the premium will make it go away
