There is a potato salad dressing that you can cook up but it's really just homemade mayonnaise..so maybe that's what she's talking about. I've had it & it's pretty awesome. Personally I use miracle whip, pickle juice & a lil bit of yellow mustard. Ask your Mom for the recipe..I'm sure she would love to share it with you...but no...you cannot buy something called potato salad dressing at any store that I know of.

jenwen--- I make my own dressing for potato salad. It goes like this 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish 1/4 cup sweet onion chopped fine 1/4 cup green olives stuffed with pimentos coarsely chopped. 1/4 cup yellow mustard all this mixed into 3/4 cup Mayo.
Now here is the kicker !!! ( when you put this on a sandwich it is a sandwich spread .
When you add boiled egg yolks mashed up
and put back in the halved egg whites it is called deviled eggs. So I guess when you mix it into cubed boiled potatoes it is potato dressing which we like to call potato salad. You know mom's are usually right it seemes to come naturally. So far as I know
there isn't a pre made dressing for potato salad as such.So to answer your question
I THINK YOU BOTH ARE RIGHT
It is a regular salad dressing turned into a potato salad dressing by adding a few more ingredients.
I hope this saves your sanity LOL
Just injoy your potato salad. jim b

Potato salad recipes vary as to the region and to an individual's likes. In the south, the dressing is usually a little mayo and lots of yellow mustard. In the north, mayo is used.
We like mayo with a little of dijon mustard mixed in. I don't recall seeing a "potato salad dressing" and I have never used "salad dressing". Some people use mayo and some use "salad dressing" like Miracle Whip.

There is no "potato salad dressing" that you can just buy in the store.
I use a combinatin of mayo and sour cream to lighten the heaviness of the mayo.
Also when adding your chopped hard boiled eggs, seperate the yolks, and add them to your mayo combination. It adds a creaminess to the potato salad.

Marzetti's bottle a potato salad dressing similar to their slaw sauce. Personally I make my own with Miracle Whip as the main base, then mustard, pickle relish, lemon juice, sugar and Worchestershire sauce.
