I don't know if this will help, but this is what I tell myself. I am not a person, but rather a human being, an animal. I am capable of so many things in this world it's disgusting, and it's up to me to choose how I will use my abilities as a human in this short time I am on Earth. I believe our purpose is to live our lives, nothing more nothing less, and the only true testament of our time here on Earth is how we spent it. At that point when you die, if you can remember anything you lost, you won't be sad because you won't have lost much. You'll have gained a lifetime of experience and possibly more. Think of all the many wonderful things a human can do, and do them!

That's why you have to find something that will remain even after you die. All is lost if what you have are things that are perishable. But a small token of charity is something that goes a long way, not only for you, but for others. When you help, the benefit may even go through generations even if it started out small. In that sense, all is not lost when you die because the good that you have done may have affected many lives and you don't know it. Don't lose hope, life is full of opportunities to meet God and store for yourself things that will last.

A child plays and is happy, yet couldn't care less about having a purpose in life.

If sheer nothingness awaits you upon your death, then what to do? You're already here, so might as well make the most of it.

On the other hand, if an angelic afterlife awaits you, then you still need to strive for a happy life here on earth.

Either way, whether you know your purpose or don't, all roads lead to trying to achieve a happy and full life.

All is not lost if you are able to pass on your genes to your children. They will continue that purpose. Your purpose is to procreate. Get on with it.
Other than that, any secondary purpose is entirely up to you.
I choose to live this only life that I will ever get to the benefit of myself and my immediate family, to the benefit of my friends, to the benefit of my colleagues and I am lucky enough to be able to benefit a whole nation through my humanitarian work.
For an atheist, not a bad deal at all. When I die, I will have left something behind that is worthy. All will not be lost.
What are YOU doing to avoid the result that all your efforts are not a total waste of oxygen?

You exist to live, that is your purpose. We all should endeavor to appreciate life for the special gift that it is. Touch people, make a difference if you can.

For those that believe in a afterlife, this just a dress rehearsal for an eternity which follows death. Man wants to live forever, through religion, they've found a way.

It isn't. You might die, but your children will stay. They shall use everything you taught them. You will die, but if you invent anything, this object will stay with the world. Think about people like Shakespeare, Einstein, and Charlie Chaplin. They have died, but their work is not lost. They still educate, entertain, and help us.

But you don't have to be a super hero to leave a mark on the world.

If you're a parent, and raise your children well, they shall bring good to the world.
If you're a teacher, your students will use things you taught them long after you're gone.
If you're a doctor, the people whose lives you saved will do good to this world.

Thats just it........there IS a purpose to your existence. God created man to live life on earth for something so much more beyond this life. When you accept a relationship with Christ, your existence doesnt end here.........in fact its just the beginning......you move on to a bigger and better place. And that doesnt happen from just doing good deeds, etc. It comes from having the ultimate and awesome relationship with Jesus Christ.

So your purpose here on this planet is HUGE.......because when you do die........nothing is lost........everything is gained.

If you don't believe in heaven, then there really is not purpose after you die. When you believe in heaven, it makes life more interesting and valuable. For us that believe, there is a reward for our suffering and pain. Heaven is complete peace, no more tears. It gives us hope to know we will see our parents and family again. (I lost 3 children).

because if you can do something to help someone here on earth or make an impact in someone's life, then at least you did something important and even if you believe its all gone in the long run then isnt our short term life worth living to the fullest?
