Either of these two are excellent choices, and in the long run, buying lenses for them will be a god choice. After all, you end up with more money in lenses than the original camera.

Just comparing these two cameras, the Canon is a better choice: 8mp, 100iso, timelapse photography, etc.

the D40 felt good in my hand, and the more comfortable a camera feels, the better for your pictures. also since not all lenses are stabilized, the more comfortable a camera is to hold, the more likely you'll get sharp, clear pics. if you can spend a little time at a local store just holding each camera and seeing what it feels like to snap pics, you may find one is much more comfy over the other.

i liked the feel of the D40 kit lens as i used it - nice and smooth. which isn't to say that the canon lens didn't feel smooth, but i think the D40 had a slight edge.

the Rebel XT has ISO 100, which is a plus for some - and certainly for me. also the Rebel XT takes all the lenses its big brother the 30D takes, while i've read that the D40 does not take all the lenses its big brothers take.

honestly i've had great experiences with every canon product i've owned or used for many years, but to be fair, i've never owned a nikon... although i did give the D40 a serious look and revisited it at stores several times before i got my 30D.

i think the Rebel XT has more features, but both these cameras are good cameras capable of taking very good pics.

Go to shutterbug.com and search for the review of the Pentax K10D in the Aug. 2007 issue. The K10D is a 10 megapixel camera with Image Stabilization* in the camera body plus it accepts all Pentax K-mount lenses. That gives you access to a lot of quality glass at affordable prices. You'll have to use manual focus and metering though.

* In my opinion IS belongs in the camera body. Putting it in the lens just adds cost and weight to the lens. As they say:
"Opinions are like noses - everybody has one."
