If you are talking about individual homes then it becomes public property and anyone can take it. If however you are talking about Lowe's trash or Wal-Mart it is actually is the property of the trash company who is picking it up because it is in their container.

I believe that you are free to take anything left curbside. However, to go through someone's trash I think is illegal. I sometimes like to just look at the stuff people throw out from afar and wish that at the time I see it, I can pick it up. a few times I return and the stuff is already taken. I have attached a site that discusses all personal experiences with the same. Just keep scrolling down! Hope you find something good!

I don't think it's wrong. Once Christmas we got a thank-you note in our recycling bin from people who'd been taking bottles and cans to recycle for the deposit money. I thought that was really nice. I had no idea they'd even been doing it. Just because I'm too lazy to take the bottles in for a deposit doesn't mean someone else shouldn't. And when people put their old junk by the curb every year for the town to haul away, I say it's fair game for whoever wants it. It saves the town from having to drag it away, too, so why not.

Taking other's trash (even if it's trash) and recyclables without their permission is stealing. In many cities, including mine, it is a crime to go through someone's trash. It's called savaging. This involves rooting through trash bags, bins and the like.
However, my husband and I have put out old microwaves and stove hoods and someone has come along and taken them. The police won't stop them (they are busy with other matters).

I say if it is by the curb take it. Don't know if that is legal or not, but certainly doesn't sound immoral to me, as long as you don't make a mess. In California we put all things that were good and re-usable out for others to take before the trash men picked up. Helped us, helped them.

As far as the law goes, it depends on placement of the trash and the state you live in. It is not always legal, nor is it always illegal.
It isn't wrong, particularly if you need food or are trying to save the planet. However, it is not polite or particularly dignified.
