Hi:

Don't drop the art, but you could still be a vet. If you actually become a vet, you could probably do a lot of very nice pet portraits or display your nice artwork in your offices. Think about what you would do actually if you didn't have to make a living or if you had $10 million already so you didn't have to worry about money - that should guide you to your true career. You might be able to find a school that would have good art and medical classes, and then settle down in a city with a good art community, and you might be happy with that. So far, some of the cities I know that have great artist communities are Santa Fe, NM (probably the number 1 spot), a lot of spots in California, and NYC, Austin TX, and KCMO.

Check out the wonderful online artist community wetcanvas. There are currently more than 112,000 worldwide members there, and basic membership is completely free but you can browse as a guest if you just want to check it out. There are many different forums for various types of art, and you might find some friends there that are in the same boat.

If you want to at all keep up your artwork along with pursuing a nonart career, and you are serious about your art, you should check out Paul Dorrell's book "Living the Artist's Life". It really gives you some thoughts about keeping your chin up when you're struggling to juggle your artwork with your other duties in life. I think I've read in it that at least one day of every week should be dedicated to your art, and another great artist said it should probably be more like 20 hours a week.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

From a practical point of view and without a good knowledge of it, I suppose it's easier to graduate a vet and take art lessons outside formal studies than take a BFA in Arts and take vet workshops :-)
Besides you say that you've always wanted to be a vet.
And let me tell you something, to be a great artist it's not about having the inspiration or inclination to it, it's about hardwork. It's like a football (soccer) player. There are many good ones, but the great ones are not great just because they were born with it, they're great because they work really hard.
I must also say that in material terms you may get more chances of getting a stable situation graduating on vets. But if you like art, don't give up on it. It's a wonderful thing. And you know what ? You may even illustrate scientific books. What about that ?
Good luck !

Kind regards,

José

its all about practice, communication, and a willingness to work/learn. of course you will feel intimidated in such a switch, everyone does. if you get frustrated and give up, then you don't get anywhere. If you commit yourself to practicing (sketch, sketch, and sketch some more) and asking questions you will get somewhere. I understand that you have more schooling ahead of you, but you really do need to work on your written communication skills (sorry if I sound mean, but I had trouble reading what you wrote). When I was frustrated at not feeling good enough of an artist to attempt art school, I was told the most useful thing in my life. You go to school to learn to be good, you don't go because you already are good. Obviously you have talent, which puts you a little ahead... now you need to take the opportunities given to you and learn everything that you can, and when your a senior in two years, you'll be just as good as you're new friends.

Tell us how old you are first..

Well what you could do is go to vet school and train etc while part time as an artist and makeing money off your art to pay for college...

then when you become a vet just keep making art for fun if you'd like while being a vet and helping animals...

Upload some artwork so we can see yours

If animals are your passion why not get a vet degree and minor in art-your vet education could help your art and your art could relate to your liking of animals. Check out Robert Bateman and other famous wildlife artists. Their work not only is wonderful but helps wildlife causes worldwide and their work could not be done without extensive either self or public education about animals, their habitats and their bodies etc. They travel and reaserch abroad and also many teach-a wonderful lucky life.

Don't be an artist because ANYBODY says you are good. If it isn't a passion you will have a miserable life. Be a vet if that is your passion and be very good at your hobby....who knows you may become a famous painter anyway.

First of all, use spell check. I would go ahead with my heart's desire. You can always work art in somewhere. I majored in Art Education, but that's all I ever wanted to do. Grams

You can only get so far on talent. It's a lot of work, even if you are pretty good to start with. Do something you have passion for and it won't be work.

Be a vet. Natural talent or ability is not all you need to be an artist. you need to feel that it is your gift, vocation, or calling; and you need to like doing it so much that you will be self motivated. While it is great that your teacher said that; she is not the one who will have to do the school work.
