My mom SWEARS by that aloe-vera gel for sunburns. Make sure you get the stuff with LIDOCAINE in it. All I can figure is the alcohol content is high enough to dry up the poison ivy, and the lidocaine numbs it enough to make it quit itching. She gets poison ivy every single year, and we could never get rid of it without taking her in for Decadron shots and dosing her on Benadryl for days. This clears it up wthin a few days...Now she won't use anything but the aloe gel! She's got her sister using it too!

Wash with some Fels-Naptha soap in cool water,
rinse very well with cool water,
air dry, apply Caladryl Gel.
Wash all clothing and bedding in hot water
with a good detergent, rinse and dry well.
Do not touch other areas of you with hands that you
have scratched with, or let arms infected rub up
against legs and knees, especially stay away
from all areas of your face.
Make sure surfaces that may have made contact,
ie arm rests, steering wheels, counter and desk tops,
telephones, doorknobs etc...
are washed down thoroughly with germ killing agents
and dry well.
Best of Luck

Try hydro-cortisone! You can buy it most anywhere. It's an over-the counter drug.
