I've been taking a college course in criminal justice during my junior year, and now my senior year in highschool. I've been researching some careers I would like to get into... for those of you in the field, what are your opinions on a job in probations?

p.s. don't bother with comments, saying I have plenty of time to figure out what to do. I like having a plan, and working towards something. Criminal justice is something I really have a passion for.

Probations is a tough job and gets very little recognition, unless you screw up. Most of your HUGE caseload will lie to your face. They are master manipulators and most have no respect for you at all. You will positively affect someone's life every once in a while. The work is more closely related to social work.

In probations you only see one end of criminal justice. You might want to look into court services officer or correctional officer. This introduces you to the justice system but in a more controlled environment than say police officer. And you see a more diverse array of the legal system.

You may decide you enjoy the social work end of CJ (probations) or the enforcement end (cop/trooper) or the legal system (CSO or CO).

There is nothing wrong with probations. It is a great career for some people. Get some experience and then choose a field.

As many other social science jobs there isn't much money in the field. Hopefully, and I don't say this lightly, that you're not expecting to make money from this type of career.

Do this type of work because you enjoy it and not to get rich.

I just recently graduated with a CJ degree and I work in Corrections. I'm also in the Sheriff's dept application hiring process.

It's like any other job that can be rewarding and fulfilling on many levels. If your heart desires it, follow your instincts.

Good luck!

You would be dealing with the dregs of society. Being a woman, it would not be safe for you to be dealing with crazies who just got out of prison.
