I've known many chihuahuas in my life, and if you have one who was raised by a person who didn't 'treat them properly' or 'socialize them' they'll always 'shake and be afraid' ... but if you get a puppy of 8 weeks -10 weeks and 'raise it to be a real dog' you'll have a wonderful 'little friend' who is just as 'nice' as any larger dog.

Actully, my mom's friend brought over her Chihuahua to meet our two dogs. Our dogs are Bichon Frises, they arnt much bigger than the Chihuahua. One of our dog is 10-12 pounds and the other is 15-20. When our dogs first met the Chihuahua, they just a little bit nervous. But, they still tried to sniff the Chihuahua and stuff. But, the Chihuahua still shaked and was nervous. But after the chihuahua got used to our dogs, they acted like they were friends.
See, little dogs, get very very nervous around new dogs (especialy big ones) and new people. But, once they get used to them they wont shake.
If you get a Chihuahua, and you don't want it to shake: When its a pup be sure to bring it around alot of new people and dogs. That way, when it gets older it wont be as scared when it meets new dogs and people because it is used to meeting new dogs and people.
BEST WISHES :-D

I have a chihuahua and when we got him as a puppy, he wasn't scared of people. He only began hating people when they always come into our house and pick him up. Now if someone comes to our house, he will bark like crazy for about 20 mins. That we can't change. But, when we take him for a walk, he is fine near other people except when they try to touch him.
It is possible to some extent. It depends on how old your dog is, it's past experiences, etc. Your dog may never change, it may be out of your control. It is difficult to properly answer this question without all the proper information on your dog.

Take him to doggy day care... one by me has a play time called "yappy hour." Also it's good if the doggy day care has a separate play area for small dogs.
Also take him to the store like Petsmart.... but sometimes it's good to keep him in the cart because if he is walking on the ground then some big dogs just run up-- and that could lead to a bad situation.
You can also take him to the park with lots of kids around-- kids always want to pet small dogs and if you know he is docile enough then that would socialize him more.
Yes, it is something that you have some control over and it is good to socialize your chihuahua more.
~good luck~

Unfortunately shaking and being unsociable is a characteristic of the Chihuahua breed and is quite difficult to overcome. Remember though that all dogs will to a certain extent get some traits from their owners and also react to the homes atmosphere. Showing your dog love as much as possible and trying not to shout at him or her when they misbehave can go a long way to reducing their general nervousness,

People are amazed when they come to my house and meet my chihuahuas. Sure there is a lot of barking when someone first comes in, but once they sit down, my chihuahuas are on their lap or cuddled up beside them. The only time mine shake is when there are storms or if it is cold.

Sure! Its called Doggie Social Group. Get a few friends with a few dogs... sweet dogs at that... maybe not so big dogs -don't wanna scare the little guy - take a nice day at the park and let him interact with the other dogs & people. Soon he will come outa the house the next time you have company.
Great Luck!

I've had three chis in my life and they all three shook like leaves. Everyone always thought they were terrified or freezing to death. The larger ones tend to not shake as much, I believe, or I've noticed, and my teacups would shake all the time. I thought it was because my children made them nervous, but even when it was just the two of us, they still would. You should maybe ask your vet, but if you ask me, you'll just have to live with it id you want to keep chihuahuas as pets. I bought Penny, my little three pounder a sweater and whether she was warmer or felt more secure, it seemed to help. Holding her tightly and snuggly also helped.

If you want your chihuahua to be social, you have to get them as a puppy and introduce them to other dogs when they are small. They are very attached to their owners, and very tempermental. Ours thinks shes a person, and when anyone or any other animal comes into the house, she doesn't want anything to do with them. We adopted her as an adult, so we didn't get the chance to start her as a puppy.

I had 6 large dogs when I got my chihuahua (max) it took a while for him to adjust to the other dogs. With your chihuahua just keep at it let him feel uneasy for a while don't baby him and let him learn at his own pace
